Do any of you take "blow-off" or "Easy 'A'" classes?

I was going to take an easy class, easy "A", but my advisor said to never take any easy A classes because med schools will know what's up. Classes such as Man's Food, Meat We Eat, etc. etc. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't going to take Flag football or anything like that, but he made it sound as, "If it sounds dumb, don't take it."

Do any of you actually take easy classes, or are all your classes rigorous, including humanties and all that? Do our electives even have to be rigorous as well?

I figured maybe I can throw in a couple of blow-off classes, but maybe that was the wrong idea...

If your GPA means something to you, NO class is a blow-off class. But there are lots of classes that are much less time consuming than the sciences/mathematics! I always take one class that I know I will enjoy no matter what (although I enjoy all of my classes, usually). And I try not to have too many really intensive-reading classes all in one semester. That way I have a good balance, and don't struggle with as much burn out.

yeah it doesnt matter...ive taken child development and human sexuality...classes i dont need but are interesting/fun...but the thing is i took these in addition to the 15-16 hours i was already taking so it was just extra stuff....as long as you arent taking 12 hours with 2 classes a sem being classes like this then ur good....

I have taken a few internet classes that are well known to be easy A's that you can complete in less than a week. And Have not had any problems getting accepted.......even at the school where I took these easy classes so I highly doubt it matters that much, as long as you dont do bad in them 😉

If possible try to get a minor out of it. I know my psych minor pulled up my GPA and was worth the extra reading.

One time I took a class called "Narcotics in America" thinking it was going to be breeze. It wound up taking more work than any class I was in at that time. We had to read about 250 pages a week, turn in a 5 page paper every other week, and write a >30 page research paper at the end of the term. I should have just dropped it, but I never did. I hated every day in that class. And what's worse, the bastard instructor gave me an A-! Seriously, he couldn't just cough up the A?

Damn...

Thanks for the replies.

You have a class called "meat we eat"? Personally, flag football sounds more legit than that.

Look, don't worry about how your application "looks." If you're taking classes to buff up your application but you have no interest in them, that's not going to be a good thing. If you want to take a class because you're interested in it, then take it-- that's how I choose my classes (I also had to take a few I didn't want to take because I need to fulfill my major).Otherwise, take your prerequisites, do well in them, and that along with a solid mcat will prove that you can do the work.

There tend to be a lot of upper level classes that "sound" like they'd be killer, but thanks to an easygoing instructor, are somewhat of a blow off. I'd ask around. You're likely to find a course or two that you can pull off an easy A, but not have the stigma of taking a bunch of 100 level courses 😉

I've been tossing around the idea of taking some online classes, just for own knowledge more than anything else.....I guess this discussion settles it. Time to start registering 😉

Don't ever take a class because it looks easy, but don't avoid it because it looks easy either. Take what looks interesting to you. If the class is entertaining, it will be easy.

Same here.... those were great 👍

I took three classes in sailing and two classes in dance, one of which is next semester, and I haven't had a problem. I also took 18 units P/NP such as my foriegn languages and a GE. I think as long as you get A's in your real classes, and by real I mean what the adcoms would consider difficult, I really don't think it matters. It's fairly obvious just by glancing over a transcript if your trying to buff up your GPA with blow offs, so I'd only take them if you really want to learn something from them.

My suggestion would be to make the blow off class P/NP so you don't have to worry about it biting you in the ass. Surprisingly I think I learn more from my P/NP class then my graded ones since going for an A is just putting up with enough BS to get one point above an A-

I always try to take an extra "Easy A" class simply as a GPA booster. And so far it's been working quite nicely. :meanie: But my course load usually ranges from 15 - 21 hours.

I think as long as it's nothing like "Cake Decorating 101," then you could always say that the class sounded interesting. And it won't look out of the ordinary.

I dunno...I never took the easy A stand-bys like "Bio Anthro" "Readings in Nature" or classes known to be taught be extremely easy profs, because I'd rather challenge myself. Most of the time it worked, a couple of times it hurt me. I probably could have graduated close to a 3.9 if I would have played the game all four years instead of trying to play academic and double majoring in Biology and Neuroscience, but I think that my 3.76 is gonna speak for itself because I took some tough classes a lot of pre-meds shy away from early in my career (Molecular biology, calc, neurosci, molecular genetics, cancer bio crazy philosophy classes). But then again I am going to take a class entitled "Science of Enology" as a tutorial...kinda hoping med schools don't look to closely into that title. Gotta love taking a 600 level bio class where the lab fee goes towards getting my night started off right...yeah thats right its essentially wine tasting from a scientific perspective. I think you should take the classes you will enjoy, there are WAY to many easy A classes out there you can goof up because they are sooooo easy.

Minah86,

Everyone takes some easy-A classes. As long as your entire transcript doesn't consist of just easy courses with some pre-med required ones thrown in-between then I don't see why medical schools would mind.
