I am interested in OB/Gyn and will probably go to an allopathic program. I do, however, want to do an osteopathic internship. Do I apply for the allopathic program during the same year as I match for an DO internship, or do I wait until I'm in my internship to apply for the residency (whether that be PGY2 or PGY1 spot)?

anybody do this?

You're going to be in a good position...

you apply to both your first year. ONLY list your top choices for your md residency. If you don't get them, you can apply the following year and will probably get your top choice because you'll be SUPER competitive with your rotating internship under your belt.

The problem is that the match is not combined. There are two matches. The osteo match in Feb and the allo match in March.

If you match in the osteo match, you are automatically dropped from the allo match. So if you your first choice is an allo program, you have to withdraw from the osteo match. otherwise, your osteo choices go first and if you match, you will be out of the allo match.

You can apply for an osteopathic internship through the AOA match while simulataneously applying for an advanced (PGY-2) position in an allopathic program through the NRMP. This is a common practice for DO students entering fields such as anesthesiology and radiology which do not have an internship linked to the program. After you complete your osteopathic internship, you start your ACGME residency the following year.

Most OB/GYN programs (as well as other primary care disciplines), however, have the internship linked to the residency, so you are simultaneously applying and interviewing for both. In that situation, as others have said, you are automatically removed from the allopathic match if you match to an osteopathic position.

I will add to the comment above/below that if you match to an osteopathic "internship", you will be removed in the allopathic match from any OB/GYN programs that have the internship linked to the residency, but not any OB/GYN programs that may happen to start as a PGY-2 position.

i have the same question, but im still confused about the answer, so maybe someone can clarify ... ??

i want to do an osteopathic internship year and an allopathic peds residency. as far as i understand, i cannot apply for a PG2 spot (this is what other posts have led me to believe). therefore i'd be applying for a PG1 spot a year before the other applicants ... do they interview me that year? or do they hold my materials and interview me the year after? it seems very confusing, but there must be someone out there who has been through this situation who can shed some more light on it ...

As far as I know, peds residencies have combined programs which links their internships to the rest of their residencies... thus, there are no peds residencies that just start at the PGY-2 year. When you apply for a peds residency, you are applying for all three years which include your internship year.

As far as wanting to have an osteopathic internship or AOA-approved internship under your belt, you have a number of options:

1. Just apply to osteopathic peds residencies.
2. Apply to allopathic peds residencies and try to get your PGY-1/internship year approved by the AOA
3. Do an osteopathic internship first, then go back and do an allopathic peds residency where you would have to repeat your internship year. (I have heard of this being done, but it is a very difficult path!)

I hope this sort of answers your questions...

Melancholy's assessment is pretty much correct, but according to this table...

http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/tables/table1_05.pdf

...there are no PGY-2 pediatrics positions. If you want to do an allopathic peds residency, you should just apply to allopathic programs and hope that the AOA will count your first year as your osteopathic internship. You have another option though: as a DO applicant you are considered "independent" in the NRMP. If you completed your osteopathic internship, you could potentially find an allopathic program that would offer you a PGY-2 position OUTSIDE of the match. Its probably rare that programs lose residents after their first year and would need someone to fill it, but I'm sure it happens.
