I have heard that DO schools prefer students that do not apply to MD programs. Has anyone heard anything about this? Could those of you who have applied to both give me any insight? Have you been accepted by both, etc?

Thanks...

I applied to both and got into both. So, it can be done - many people on this site have also applied both ways.

Nova Southeastern requires you to list all schools to which you applied -- and I listed some MD schools. I decided not to return the MD secondaries but was not sure when I sent my app in to Nova. They did not say anything except: "If you got into every school you applied to, which one would you go to?" That could be interpreted as an MD vs DO question or just a question assessing your interest in their specific school/program. I said if they accepted me I would go to their school (which was 100% truthful) because I didn't want to fit a school... I wanted to go to a school that fit me. For me, that meant primary care focus, excellent facilities, interdisciplinary teaching (sister who is an NP, friends who are pharmacists... so it's important to me), and early patient contact (probably the most important factor to me). The South Florida location didn't hurt either!

Thanks 2003 & Nick! I would prefer D.O. but I live in Oregon and the only state Medical school OHSU accepts a good percentage of their residents and the price is right.

FYI, when the NSUCOM admissions director spoke to the premedical students at my old university, he said that they understand that people must apply both routes, just because of the competition. So there is no problem listing both.

Good luck.

Applying to both DO and MD school is not a big issue. Most important is how to answer such question when you are being ask during the interview.

I was being questioned during one of my interviews and I told them that I apply only to 5 MD schools and fourteen DO schools. This shows that I am very serious about Osteopathic medicine.

Nowadays, getting to medical schools are so competitive and most of the admissions committee will understand the students.

I applied to both MD and DO programs and I am accepted to both (MD & DO). The interviewers did ask me about it, and of course, I was truthful. They did not seem to have a problem with it. But, I have heard that some DO schools may have a problem with people that want to be a DO as a fallback, but this may be another pre-med rumor as you can see from the other posters.

I applied to both MD and DO programs and at my interview at NYCOM they do ask you whether or not you applied to MD programs or other DO programs. My advice to you is to be honest but be prepared to give explain why. At my NYCOM interview, they asked me if I would be disappointed if I was accepted to a DO school and not a MD school. Any school prefers not to be a backup school for anyone. If at all possible they want to accept people who want to go there.
