DO's cannot do cardiology fellowships or cardiothorasic surgery residencies. Only family practice.

Wow Tanner82, you are completely incorrect! DOs can and do hold any specialty that MD have. In fact, it has been decided that very soon board exams will be identical.

The guy was being sarcastic (the NYCOM 2012 should be enough proof). Also, the COMLEX will still be with DO schools with no signs thus far of disappearing.

Is it harder for Doctor of Osteopathic medicine to get in to cardiac surgery as compared to MD?

I worked with a DO cardiac surgeon and even DO nerosurgeon, so it's not impossible. Cardiac Surgery is highly competitive for MDs and that means it's even more so for DO's. Just a fact of life that all other things completely equal an MD will more often be chosen over DO for certain residencies/fellowships. By the same token an MD student that doesn't have top scores across the board and that went to a lesser ranked MD school will be less competitive than one who did.

I often recommend that students who are set on the most competitive specialty start off aiming for the undergrad institution (some parents start their kids down this path in elementary school) that has the best rep at placing one at the best med school that is known for placing the most people on the track for a certain specialty. It's called maximizing your chances. Otherwise, just work harder and make it happen anyway but if possible avoid making choices on purpose that make your life harder.
