[edit]: see DrMom's post below to learn the significance of The Caduceus vs the Staff of Asclepius.

Take a look at the DO Asclepius:

Do the "DO" letters look haphazardly thrown in?
Take a look at the MD

symbols. I think they just look better.

I'm not pushing to change the DO Asclepius. After all, the staff of Asclepius is the true symbol of medicine (thanks DrMom). I'm just wondering if anyone thinks the DO version is a bit unattractive.

Thanks DrMom, this is a great link. I knew nothing about the difference... time to do some editing above...

.

I agree, I think it's poor graphic design.

So am I correct in saying that the DO symbol is an asclepius? Then what is the MD symbol officially? Isn't it just an asclepius with two snakes instead of one?

I'm not sure what you mean by the "MD Symbol" because the AMA
ama_logo2.gif
uses the staff of asclepius as their symbol, so does WHO
WHO_400x388.jpg
.

The staff of asclepius is a staff with a single snake wound around it, without wings.

The caduceus, which some people recognize as the symbol for medicine, is the staff with two snakes and wings. It is actually associated with Hermes, who primarily represents commerce, not medicine. Asclepius on the other hand, was considered a great healer... which is why his staff is used to symbolize medicine.

Having said all that, maybe the AOA logo should be changed, but they should definitely stick to the staff of asclepius.

PS - As we speak, a friend of mine is designing a tattoo for me which incorporates a staff of asclepius and a phoenix, which is part of why I know all of this (in addition to taking greek mythology in college)

The Staff of Asclepius is the symbol for medicine. The "DO" is added for osteopathic medicine. The Caduceus is the symbol for healthcare as a whole (medicine, nursing, etc.).

Wow, talk about a resurrection. I've since learned a lot since starting this thread this two years ago.

The caduceus
caduceus.gif
, typically used by MD medicine is the magic wand of the Greek god Hermes who was linked with alchemy.

The Staff of Asclepius
AskleppiosGuysHosp.jpg
, adopted by osteopathic medicine, honors Asclepius who was the most most diginified physician of his time in ancient Greece.

And for the record, this poll predated the AOA's decision to launch their new brand 😀

the twin winged symbol is the military symbol of medicine. both md and do use the staff of asclepius....

Ive got a symbol for medicine right now. It came to me 20 hours into my first call shift. It also takes the shape of a single point, sticking straight up, only without any wings, and a lot angrier.

I have only seen the caduceus linked with medicine in the US Army, as the official insignia of the medical corps.

Pretty funny that we wear a pagan symbol on our collars. Perhaps the Army should rethink its 1902 decision.
