Most DO schools have gpa medians of 3.5 and MCATS of <30. Would they possibly yield protect candidates with a lower median GPA, but considerably higher MCAT? For example an Asian CA girl with a 3.4 with a 519.

No, DO schools do not yield protect. @Goro can verify this.

I'm not surprised, but am curious why the difference between DO schools and some MD schools which do yield protection? Is it because DO schools at least get a decent sized seat deposit whereas MD schools can end up with a large number of people withdrawing right at traffic day with no benefit at all to the school?

They know that some will probably slip through the MD cracks and land in their laps. One of my good friends had a 3.85+\515 and is currently attending the only DO school he applied to and killing it. Just couldn't get off the few MD waitlists he was on

To the OP, no.

they might not yield protect but some of the schools will question why DO vs MD

Here's a theory. Yield protection has to do with limited interview spots. I would guess that mid level MD schools get several hundred apps per year with extremely high LizzyMs - too many to be interviewing them in large proportions if they very rarely choose to attend you. A DO school however probably only gets a handful of those applicants per year. Their odds of snagging the person might be small, but if it only costs you a dozen or two interview slots, then why not go ahead and invite the handful?
