DO friendly programs and competitiveness required

Sorry if this has already been addressed somewhere else. Can anyone tell me how competitive I need to be if I'm DO and looking at columbus ohio nationwide childrens or loma linda?

specifically should i spend time rotating at these places for a 4th year elective? I'm average competitive for peds (not top, but not too low usmle, top 25% of class). i heard its not worth time rotating at certain places if i dont have rockstar board scores and single digit rank if I'm DO. (i.e. dont rotate at baylor for example, but still apply.) any opinions/insight would be helpful. Thanks!

It's tough to say exactly what kind of candidate you need to be for an individual program. Certainly, you need to be a stronger applicant for very competitive programs, but in general Peds is a pretty open field. I think that it's almost always in your favor to rotate at a program, and even if you don't get a glowing evaluation, it certainly shows interest in a program. Residencies aren't out to get the most competitive interns, after all; they want people who will fit into the program and who want to be there.

I don't think this advice really changes much for a DO. I've certainly heard that some programs (not necessarily in Peds) don't look favorably on DOs in general for whatever reason, but it doesn't hurt to try, right? If you have a good ideas of where you might want to go, then do rotations there, try to get letters from there if possible, and try not to think of yourself as being at a disadvantage in any way.

Columbus has a DO residency. Are you looking at that program? Ohio is one of the states that requires a DO internship, correct? So most MD programs in Ohio are going to balk at you if they do not have a DO internship attached or are DO/MD programs.

AZCOM put a resident at Loma Linda 4 years ago who's a DO. That says a lot, they are obviously open to DO's.

You may be the first DO to go through the place, too. So, honestly, doing a rotation can only help you if you really want to go there...

Do the rotation there, showcase your self, sell it. You will increase your chances alot. It doesn't hurt trying. DO's have gotten into Baylor.

Ohio is not one of the 5 required states for DOs to do osteopathic internship to get licensure. I have a close friend who is graduating from a DO school with me this year who matched at Ohio State/Columbus Childrens/nationwide whatever it is called these days. She matched through the allopathic match by the way and did not do a rotation there so I would highly encourage you to not lose hope in ending up there.

I would definitely try to do an away rotation. They tend to remember you better than just a name on a piece of paper. Nationwide children's is awesome! Im starting there in July as an intern.
