3rd year IMG here from the UK.

Would like to do Gen. Surg electives in the NYC area preferably (but am open to anywhere on east coast). I'm considering IMG friendly schools like Bronx-Lebanon, Albert Einstein, NYU Presby, etc.

Does anyone know if Step 1 is required for electives? My Step 1 is scheduled for end of this month, but I'm considering pushing it to the summer to ensure I get a higher score.

Also, I plan to do this elective May, 2011. When should I start applying/inquiring? This summer? This is another worry I have, since if I write Step 1 in August/Sept, it might be too late for when I apply for electives?

TIA,

depends on the program.

All electives i did required that you:

A) completed your core general surgery rotation
b) passed usmle step 1

ymmv so its best to contact programs you are interested in and see if that's the case.

+1 We don't take any overseas students (or Americans for that matter) who have not passed Step I (COMLEX or USMLE) and completed a core general surgery rotation. There may be programs that do not have these requirements but I can't think of any.

Just to add.. most places also require that you have:

- Proof of malpractice/liability insurance. This is usually provided by your medical school.
- Health assessment form showing up-to-date vaccinations.
- Supporting documents such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.
- NY State Education Department requires a form to be completed for short-term and long-term electives.

If I were you I would start looking into this stuff now because paper pushing can take up a lot of time.
