I had this kinda offbeat question.

I can't drive and I was wondering how bad will it get when I start M3/M4? I mean,is it always possible to use public commute? and/or stay close enough to your rotation center that you don't need a car?

How would public transport be at Atlanta vs.DC?

I think you probably need to learn how to drive. When you are older and have a residency you may have home call where you need to get to the hospital quickly. Its a pretty essential skill to have these days.

When you hit MS3 and MS4 it is theoretically possible to manage without a car.

Easiest cities to do so would be NYC, San Francisco and Chicago. DC is decent but not great.

Other cities are possible, but time consuming and sometimes dangerous. I have a classmate who chooses to always use public transit in Orange County of all places. (our transit is TERRIBLE). He is super patient, bikes a lot and often takes hours to go somewhere that should be a 30 min drive. He got mugged at the beginning of 3rd year while waiting for a bus. Still does it, but its scary to think about.

So theoretically its doable anywhere - but its not very practical.

You wouldn't need a car if you live next to the hospital...medicinesux (a prominent poster on SDN) lives next to work and just walks to the hospital.

You could also bike if you are within a reasonable distance (10 miles or so) and can do so without getting too sweaty.

However, it would be best to drive or at least have a license for the future!

I do it in Houston, but all of my schools rotation sites are within 5 minutes of each other off the rail.

You can live at Floyd and eliminate the need for commute.

Grady is near a MARTA station so as long as you don't live too far from a marta station you should be fine. I don't know if they do it but you can contact Georgia State b/c they have housing near Grady
