Hi all,

I've been perusing the site and I think I have an answer but wanted to ask others. I am a late in life college graduate, BAAS from UNT 2011 with a cumulative GPA of 3.67. I will be 38 this week. Last year my son was discovered to have sensory processing disorder. Being his advocate led me to discover the world of OT. It has done amazing things for him and I think it could be the ideal career I have been searching for. Ideally I would love to practice OT in the not for profit sector.

I would need to take the necessary Pre-requisites as well as shadowing. However, I would only be able to apply at TWU Dallas in 2013 due to my family obligations. To even apply I would stop working my well paid job to accomplish the necessary requirements. Essentially, it would be a suicide admission. Do I have any chance at all?

Thanks for your honest input.

I should mention that my GPA for my last 60 hours is a 3.8

I would suggest maybe taking some of the prereqs (especially anatomy & physiology) and seeing how you do. Your gpa is very good, but the prereqs are important too. I believe it would be a good idea to contact the school or sit for one of their info sessions and get an idea of what you will need to do, then weigh your options.

Well, that makes me about 3 weeks older than you, and I'm applying for the 2013 school year. Actually, if you don't have the pre-reqs, then you should plan on applying for 2014.

I will stop working for 2-3 years, raid my retirement accounts to pay for school, and take a 50% pay cut in order to go into OT. I made the decision for the career change 2 years ago and have been doing pre-requisites since then. But I have been thinking about changing to OT for over 10 years.

Most schools will want you to have most of the pre-requisites completed by the time you apply so that they can see your grades. Take them at a community college as independent study or for evening/weekend classes.

You have to do volunteer/observation hours with an OT, so if your son is currently seeing an OT, that might kill two birds with one stone.
