When did you applY? Or are you applying next cycle (June 2005)?

I can't take classes over. The thing is I took too many upper div bio classes at the same time. like 4 in a quarter and 3 in another. I never recieved less than a C in any class so I can't repeat, which sucks. People who get F's and D's higher gpa's than I do. and that sucks because they repeated them, but I don't have an option to repeat cause I have lots of c's and no D's and F's.

If you've taken upper level sciences, try taking a one-year masters program, it will show schools you ain't playing no joke! 😡

I think you will not have a chance whatsoever with that GPA. Need to bring it up!.......or maybe you do......I don't know!

I'm pretty sure a 2.9 (total) GPA will raise a few eyebrows if you applied to Harvard, UCLA, UCSF and all other competitive schools. But, I don't know you personally. Perhaps you have a debilitating illness. Maybe you spent 99% of your life dodging bullets in Haiti. Maybe you were born with horn or were traumatized as a child for lacking a belly-button.

I kid because I really don't know your situation.

If you have an excuse for your grades, by all means, let it shine. But if you're a rich kid in the O.C. with no other problems besides a 2.9 GPA, then I would suggest either doing a 1 year masters or prolonging your graduation by taking additional science classes. The only problem is, you got to figure out what's preventing you from getting better grades. Because until you figure this out, you won't do well in future classes...much less, dental school. You have the motivation and a great career ahead of you, keep chuggin'.

what used to prevent me from getting better grades is taking a vert. zoology, molec. genetics, physiology, and ecology, (all upper div classes) in a single quarter. And that is only one of my quarters. I'm sure If I took two science + 1 GE or 2 GE's I wouldn't be in this mess. OH WELL. I have extended my grad deadline, planning on taking extra science classes. this next two quarters. I don't know if this means anything, but I moved here, and my first language is not english. But if A 26 in the Bio section of DAT and a 22 TS doesn't show them that I know my stuff, then I don't know what will?
btw I just got my pink slip and my science gpa is not as bad as I thought, but it still isn't something you would brag about. its a 2.8, 2.79 to be exact. If I just take a few more science course I'm pretty sure i can pull my gpa over a 3.0
we'll see If I get into anywhere.
If it means anything I attended UCSB, so it wasn't what you would call a fly through with A's educational institute.

Please don't hesitate to put in your 2 cents.

Your DAT scores aren't really reflective of your GPA. DId you just slack off too much in undergrad? Or were you working a full time job or something?

WE can't help you, unless you help us.

We need to no a little more about you, before we make our snap judgement and decide your fate in the SDN world of acceptance.

Did you work?
English is not your first language
what is your major
Were you active in undergrad, as far as clubs and other volunteer related organization besides med and or dental.
Did you do any research(science related) while in undergrad.

etc, etc

Ya I was working at the same time as I was studying, Also I was shadowing a dentist at the same time. We don't have any dental groups in our school, so I'm trying to open one up, there are no support groups for dentists in our school. My major is Biological Sciences, BS. I volunteered in a hospital before highschool, don't know if that counts. I'm am doing research this on skull morphology. I guess what happened is that I was working and couldn't really put the full force into studying. But thats to help myself in college. I have had a lot of jobs. Also family and personal problems might have gotten in the way of studying, don't really know how to show the admissions commitee all this. But hopefully I'll have a chance somewhere. If not just gotta work harder this year and see what happens. I am middle easter, does that count as minority? most schools dont' cout that as a minority.

On your primary application, there are questions that ask for your employment history. It is to your benefit to write down all of your jobs and the number of hours you worked. If you had family or personal problems that greatly affected your academic focus, you can also write about this in your AADSAS application and in most secondaries (i.e. UCSF specifically asks a few questions on your hardships). Definitely talk about your research, your struggles, etc. But do not use these excuses to validate yourself. Many people have been in your shoes; I know a girl who was previously a homeless crack-addict and is now going into medical school.

Its tough having to juggle work, friends and family along with a rigorous academic schedule. But, think of it this way. Its early training. As a dentist, you'll have to do the same thing. Except by that time, you'll have other lives on the line.

You totally have a chance! Great DAT scores! Amazing experience! (be sure to get some great rec' letters).. My GPA was not stellar either and I got in to multiple schools.. Apply as EARLY as you possibly can.. apply to private schools.. apply to in state schools... call the schools while you wait to see whats going on.. pray 🙂

I Want to thank everyone for all their replies and for the motivation. Altough I did not apply early, I hope I can still get in. If not I"m going for it next year again, hopefully with a better gpa.

to the person who said I should talk to schools while i'm waiting, I have a question. What do I say when I call them. Should I inquire about their dental program? should I ask them my chances etc.

thanx again guys.

By the way I applied in late septermber, but, my application has already been sent out, I am getting an extremely good letter of rec from one science prof and another good one from another non sci prof. I also have a letter of rec from the dentist I shadowed.

Could you tell me what material you used for Bio? That's the area I scored lowest. Thanks.

anyone have n e thing else to add???

Apply to the right schools and you will have a better opportunity 🙂 You can do it! Your DAT makes me so proud! That's great 🙂 Okay so the 16's a 16. I have two...count them...one...two...on mine and I got 5/5 interviews, thank the Lord. Don't lose hope 🙂

I think the working thing is kind of a poor excuse, I worked full time starting in junior year of high school, yet I was able to maintain a gpa above a 3.0. Yes mention it, but I think the work thing gets a little tiresome.

In your case mentioning that work was an obstacle for you while you were in undergrad would work for you. Considering that your gpa was crappy becuase of work, but when you took the DAT and you actually studied that you got really great score. It would be different if you worked full time and got really bad scores on the DAT.

The middle eastern thing is not going to work, as far as minority status. I think minority only works for hispanics and african americans. I could be wrong but do you really want to go to a place that only allowed you in becuase you filled there minority quota.

Good luck

Heres the deal: yeah your GPA is lower. But you did really well on the DAT. If you applied to 10+ schools you schould get interviews and 1-2 acceptances. It really depends on the school. One school I talked to said they value science GPA while a few others I have talked to base acceptances a lot on DAT score. Do yourself a favor and dont worry about other people's numbers and/or advice. I actually scared myself out of applying to a school because of my DAT score and then took it and improved. An admission counselor directly told me not to go by the stats that are posted on here. Not only are they a minority of the applicant pool, but some stats arent totally true. Most people have an 18 DAT with a 3.2-3.5 GPA. If I were you I would (if you arent already) enroll in classes in the spring (advanced sciences like Immuno, Biochem, Micro and Anatomy/Physiology). Work hard and get the grades up....if you have to reapply and try to get into a grad program (thats what I had to do). If (and when) you get an interview tell them you (might) enroll in some of the upper level classes and you will submit grades in May (which might be too late, but you could get an acceptance by then) .....some of the privates fill their classes until June/July. Point of the story: dont listen to people who say you cant or you dont have a shot....you never know. Keep your head up.

definitely have a chance. Im not sure what people on here are talking about.

With that DAT score, you could get yourself into BU or NYU. Maybe both.

Apply and see.

i agree with rezdawg.
keep your head high and dont give up
best wishes

Well here's a bad scenario for everyone to look at:

Suppose someone made C's in all prereq's, with a couple of D's thrown in. They are in school now retaking the two D's. Should they retake ALL the prereq's with C's, or just retake the D's and pursue a masters, etc?
