  1. Pre-Dental
I recently heard about Podiatry. I am currently pre-dent though, this area seems very good. So I would like to apply to podiatry schools next cycle.

my cGPA is about 3.3 sGPA is about 3.1. My DAT score is 21AA/21TS/22PA. Also, I will get MS in Chemistry next year.

I am thinking to apply NYCPM, Temple, and Barry since only those schools accept DAT. Also, probably I am going to do job shadowing podiatrist so I will see this area is really for me.

Do you guys think I have a chance? Since I am newbie, I know nothing about this area. Any advice would help me.

Thank you so much for reading this.

P.S How long should I do job shadowing?

My numbers are around the same- 3.4 cGPA, 2.9 sGPA. However, I took the MCAT (retaking it this August to boost it a little). Applying early is key; I believe that the AACPMAS opens for next cycle on September 8.

Be sure you've sufficiently shadowed a podiatrist before then, so you're app will be sent in right when you can ask for a letter of rec. I'm currently shadowing a podiatrist, and loving it! 👍

Apply now for this cycle. There are still some spots.

not late yet?? I thought it's too late now. 🙄

hmm.... but I don't think I am ready. I haven't done any job shadowing yet.

Thank you for your advice🙂

I just met 5 people that interviewed at my school on Friday, they all came from or are going to multiple schools for interviews. If you know you definitely want to do Podiatry, get on the phones right now and go. Call and see who still has spots. I know Barry has some spots because they raised their admission standards a little and haven't accepted as many as in the past. Other people have temple interviews next week. DO it!!!

yeah.. i just realized how stupid that sounded that i said that....that has already been pointed out to me lol

For the most part, yes. However, some MAY let you have a letter of rec from another type of doctor instead (MD/DO). But overall, next to the committee letter, another letter from a doc is usually required.

Check the admissions information on the school's websites. 👍

I'm just wondering.. by applying early, do you mean before april? it seems like the early tier deadline right? or do you mean before september of the previous year? cause I know for pharmacy schools, you need to apply pretty much before sept. of the previous year.

Thats what I would call "early". Looks like AACPMAS is opening up about 1 month earlier for the class of 2015. Their website states that on August 2, the application portal will open. I personally would shadow this summer, apply no later than end of September, get all of your interviews out of the way and have a decision by December. Not only does your chance of acceptance go up, but scholarship money is more readily available from each program the earlier you are accepted.

I agree with dtrack...early means before October.

OP, you definitely have a chance but it is always in your best interest to apply as early as possible. Now is the time to get your LORs, Personal Statement, Pod shadowing, etc. all set. Have everything ready so as soon as apps come out, you can hit submit asap. You should also call Barry, Temple, and NYCPM to make sure that they will still take the DAT for next cycle. You might also want to take the MCAT to broaden your school choices.

Hey guys, thank you for replying to my question.

Also, I'm wondering for MCAT, can I take it after I submit the application to the schools? or do i have to have the MCAT score ready before I can apply? I plan on taking the MCAT in Jan, but as you guys mentioned, I should apply before October, will they still consider me as applying early?

Thanks for the help 🙂

You can submit before your MCAT. You should call or email each school about this. I think some schools will interview you and even offer a conditional acceptance (they will state what MCAT they want you to get). Other schools won't interview until you have an MCAT score though.

letsskate,

You can take the MCAT after submitting your application; however you should be aware that the schools must now have an MCAT score on file now before offering final acceptance. Here is an excerpt from another thread by Mandy from Scholl elaborating:

"I wanted to alert you to two major changes in the admissions process to a college of podiatric medicine:
Effective immediately, no college will invite an applicant to interview until a COMPLETED AACPMAS application is available. A completed application is defined as an AACPMAS application with verified grades.
Secondly, colleges are able to interview an applicant without receipt of an official standardized test score. NO admissions actions will be taken PRIOR to the receipt of an OFFICIAL standardized test score. For MCAT scores, an official MCAT score is accepted ONLY through the AACPMAS program."

Here is the article she was referring to:

So, basically, you can receive a conditional acceptance with pre-reqs pending (if you're like me with one or two to finish up while applying) but not without an MCAT score.
