Hi all.

First off, I'm a canadian citizen attending a University in Ontario.

My first year cumalative GPA is 3.4 (adaas scale)... sci GPA: 3.2
A BSc in Pyschology here is 3 years (4 years for honours)

- I have taken all the predent courses except Physics which I will take next year.

My Plan:
- Do well second year (& finish all dent prereqs)
- Apply through Adaas next summer, for the Fall 2005 class.
- Write my DAT (canadian, or US) late next year.
- Re-write early 2005 if needed. I will be aiming for 20's/20's

So, within a 3 year period I shall complete an BSc, with a GPA around 3.5x

I would like to apply to UDmercy, UofMaryland... and 2-3 more.

- By Jan 2005 I'm planning on 50+ dentist shadowing hours, and the LOR's will not be a problem.

So the adcom will only have a 2 year cumulative GPA when reviewing my application?

Is my plan reasonable? or am I mistaken?

Thanks
magik

Magik,

Sounds like you have a good plan. Although im not sure how ad-coms view canadian applicants, it sounds to me that you are on the right track. I don't think the ad-coms will care whether you spent 2 years or 6 years, so long you have completed all the required courses. Also im not sure if some schools will accept the canadian DAT, so plan on taking the US version as well.
If you're gpa on AADSAS (the US version) is around a 3.5+ then I think you have an excellent chance at many of the private US schools.
So I think your plan is very reasonable.

ALl the best

Thanks for your input shootin4par

With a 3.4-3.5 cumm GPA and decent DAT scores, will I be competitive for Maryland?

Magik

I think you will be competitive for several schools. You may want to look into a few more schools. I had a few friends who interviewed at Maryland and heard mixed reviews. Supposedly they are building a new dental building etc. I cancelled my interview there, but I think they have a good program. If you have any questions about other schools and their program dont hesititae to PM me.

I think you will be competitive, but as shootin' said, it doesn't hurt to reevaluate the schools you are planning on applying to. Of course, some of this will change as your grades change and as you actually take the DAT.

Having said that, it seems you have thought quite a bit about your future, and have set some goals to work with. That is certainly admirable, and I suspect you'll reach those goals.

Good luck!

UofD likes you Canadians. You shouldn't have a problem there. Just keep in mind that if you get below a 17 on any part of the DAT UofD will require a retake.

Thanks for your helpful insight guys!

Shootin', I PM'ed ya... your mailbox is full 🙂

My main concern about getting in dental school is tuition costs. I cant afford to completely pay my undergrad fee's, so the unearthly private school tuition costs pose a problem. Do you know which state schools accept the most out-of-state applicants? Any chance of a canadian getting lucky with Ohio state? 😉

I just found out tuition at UDMercy is ~33k/year 😱

(If I cannot get into any canadian/state schools, then I will have to try private schools.... but at this point I want to keep that Plan Z)

Based on the statistics Maryland comes to mind. I dont mind moving anywhere in the States, if I can get into a school with tuition less than 20k/year.

what do you think my chances will likely be?

thanks
