That computer is probably fine and getting something for a new processor is likely not necessary. That said if you are going to game on said laptop, aliens are pretty cheap right now and pack a mean punch.

Or just get a refurb Macbook Air 2014 for 800-900 dollars, get a great lightweight computer with 12 hours of battery life, and not have to purchase any new software.

also resale value for those things is crazy good, a 4 year old macbook air still sells for roughly $600, which is incomparable compared to any other machine (other macbooks excluded).

Your school isn't going to inspect your computers specs...

I don't think I was ever required to run anything beyond Word, PowerPoint and a browser. If you want to do stats-heavy research you'll want something that can use those programs.
