Yes, my IM shelf is tomorrow but I start peds Monday and want to have everything I need before hand.

Is BRS for peds 100% necessary? I am really not a textbook reader at all but so many people recommend this text.

Same goes for surgery and OB? I had a lot of trouble sitting down and reading Case Files for FM. For surgery, I already have Pestana surgery notes, but same goes for DeVirgillio.

Just need some general advice. For FM, i got through maybe half of Case Files and did maybe 600 practice questions and an NBME. For psych, I got through all of First Aid, did half of the UWorld questions and an NBME. For medicine.. i read two chapters of Step Up To Medicine. I switched to Zanki two weeks in and I am hoping it helped. Ive done 600 UWorld and two NBMEs, scoring mid 70s on both. I realize i dropped the ball getting through UWorld multiple times, but, I am just exhausted by the end of the day and struggle to power through.

TL;DR
What resources are MUST HAVES for Peds, OB, and surgery? More specifically, do I need BRS Peds to be here by Monday? I struggle reading textbooks so this is what worries me

For peds - no.

I got 91 percentile with zanki + uworld alone.

You NEED to finish U world. You KNOW this!!!!!!!!

You’d think I would have learned my lesson with Step 1. Ugh, well, what’s done is done.

Uworld, zanki and NBMEs will honor you every clerkship. Use Emma Holiday’s lecture and PowerPoint too for quick review before the exam.

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Thank you.
Just for sure don’t want to drop $50 on a book i won’t use, so i am asking everyone haha

EDIT:

Lemme say this much: i think getting through all of Zanki likely saved my butt (and I matured around 70% of the deck), but I will probably get my score tomorrow so we shall see.

Still not sure if I should buy BRS or Case Files for peds though.

Protip, if your med school has a library, there's probably an 80% chance they have one or both of these in an older (i.e. equivalent) edition.

I read part of Essential Pediatrics (which was in the library) and did UW and one NBME and did pretty well. If I had to do it again I would've done more NBMEs rather than read more.

Ive done 600 UWorld
Assuming Step 2 is far away, you might consider finishing the IM UW questions for the peds shelf, if you have time. Your preceptors will constantly tell you "kids aren't small adults," but much of the shelf treats them as that. This will also help for surgery, btw.

Same goes for surgery and OB?
These two rotations are pretty different than the rest as you may/will have limited time to study. A long textbook won't help because you might not have time to read it.

After IM, I think there is no shelf covered better by UW than OB. I had a tough OBGYN rotation so only did UW and the APGO question bank (provided by school) and read a few guideline papers but ended up honoring.

The best resource for surgery was what I learned on the actual rotation, followed by Pestana's. Not sure what to tell you on this, as it was my worst shelf.

Thanks! I plan on taking CK in June or July so I for sure have some time to do it all, but not likely in the next five weeks. Totally done screwing around and I plan on doing ~20 UWorld Peds questions a day before my shelf right before Christmas, just so I have them finished.

Update: i peeled through BRS today and there is absolutely no way I would finish that book in time for the shelf. Zanki will for sure help with the milestone stuff and UWorld is UWorld. Might grab Case Files for extra reading. Not totally sure yet, or even BRS as a reference book for things I am less clear on, but it is expensive at the same time.
