hi

i need to know if it is necessary to be in a medical residency before i do step 3

I want to get into a residency in New York........

thanks

I just started looking at Step III books. According to Kaplan's Qbook, anyone who is a Medical School graduate and who has passed steps 1 and 2 is eligible to take the test. Don't know how official that statement is, but that would make me think that you do not need to be in a residency. I thought the reverse was true prior to reading that this morning. Perhaps check the NBME site?

as long as you have completed steps 1, 2 & the csa then you can register in a state that allows candidates to sit for the exam without any pg work.
check fsmb site for the list of those states.

HELP! The FSMB site here http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_eliinitial.html states that everyone needs at least to complete an internship (or 2-3 yrs of residency) to apply for an initial medical license. I know from this forum that several states (seems, CA, FL, MD, NY - any others?) allow taking Step 3 WITHOUT any PGY training. Where do I find the list of the states that let you do that? I even went to, say, MD state medical board website and could not find anything there.

Sorry to be so clueless - I am sure the answer is very obvious, and I will feel like an idiot once somebody points it out to me, but at the moment I am drawing blank. Help!

You're confusing eligibility for Step III and requirements for your initial medical license. The FSMB website is hard to navigate, but I found the link you need. You're not an idiot; it's just that the FSMB site is not user friendly. The link you showed was for initial licensure, while this link is for taking Step III. Good luck!
