Im about to graduate this fall with a bs in biology and my transcript looks like garbage. Ive been engaged and cheated on, my cousin passed away, and to top it off a good friend of mine has a rare cancer and is fighting it even though the doctor told her she has a 25% chance of living. My gpa by the time i graduate is going to be a 2.75 and my major gpa a 2.4. I have 7 D's and 4 F's not to mention a couple C's. I really want to become a pharmacist and its breaking me that all this stuff had to happen. What should i do? I love science and biology and all that and I dont want to give up. I only had one semester where everything was fine and I was on the honor list because i aced all my classes then. But before and after that semester, it was bad....helpful advice will be very appreciated

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, that's so rough. I've looked around these boards and seen similar cases academics wise, and I'll echo some of the advice I saw. You're going to want to retake all the pre requisite classes you got a C or lower in. Do your very best to get an A in all, or vast majority of classes. If you haven't done so, get some experience in the field. Volunteer, job shadow, pharmacy technician, anything you can. Essentially, if you can show an upward trend, get some extracurricular activities, destrouy the PCAT (if its required) then you have a chance. You'll want to explain your situation in the personal statement, and with a turnaround in your grades that could really benefit you. Now I'm just echoing the advice I've seen here with others in a similar position.

Best of luck to you!

You will also need a very strong personal statement stating why you did not perform well in school. Everyone has a bad semester, but seems like you have an unfortunate trend. I must say, however, schools do not want to hear about being cheated on as an excuse.

Right now, if pharmacy is your dream, you must dust your self off, get in the right frame of mind, and retake classes.

Also, grades are important, but they are not the whole picture. Do you have strong LORs? ECs? Pharmacy experience etc...

This is definitely still doable. Do not lose hope. But you have to turn it up a notch now.

Good Luck 👍

I think you need to sit down and take a long hard look at your future. Pharmacy may be a dream of yours, but one that may not necessarily be viable for you currently. Right now you are accruing a lot of debt and don't really have anything to show for it. Likely you are going to have to amass much more debt to get yourself out of the hole here. Once you get to pharmacy school you're going to have to learn how to not let life get in the way of your education. Bad stuff happens, I know, as my mother developed and struggled with cancer before succumbing to it during my undergrad studies. Whilst those events are tragic and life affecting, if they completely derail you from your goals you will never make it through school. Sit down and look at the big picture, that is what you need to do to get back on track. I would also remain open to other alternatives. Pharmacy school requires a level of dedication and focus that dwarfs the pre-pharmacy experience and it sounds like you have a lot to sort through right now.

I never get the point you pre-pharms try to make when you say it's "your dream" to be a pharmacist. I'm a pharmacist but it was never a dream. I didn't stay up late in childhood talking to my parents/friends about how I can't wait to be a pharmacist. It just sounds weird.

For me, dreams were to travel to Europe, go to a Miami Dolphins game, go to Hawaii, have a family, own a home. But it was never---- be a pharmacist. Sure, it was an accomplishment when I finished school, started my first job, etc. But I wasn't giddy.

Hmmm.... am I think only one that just snickers when I read this stuff? "It's my dream to become a pharmacist". How it is anyone's dream to work at Walgreens? Just don't get it. 😕

If its something you really want to do, would it not be your "dream?"

Having been on admissions for 2 years, I can tell you that what you DON'T want to do is blame all of your grade work on any extenuating circumstances. The reason being that a lot of people have gone through hard times and not gotten poor grades and saying things like "well I got a D because of this..." etc. invites the comparison and doesn't show the committee that you've learned anything from the experience. It's important to show that, if hard times befall you again, you will be able to maintain your grades and not just get Ds/Fs again.

You honestly will not believe the number of people who apply with low GPAs and they ALWAYS have some kind of reason for it, legit or not.

Definitely mention the circumstances (usually there is a spot for it in the Pharmcas) but rather than passing them off as excuses, use the opportunity to explain how you've grown, what you learned from the experience, and spin it in a positive way. Then you'll want to have some indication that you are capable of succeeding in the sciences. Either by having a sky-high PCAT score, or taking additional classes after graduation and getting As (I say As because the stark contrast is more effective.) Of course some schools will overlook your GPA if you have a lot of ECs/research/pharmacy experience.

Also...PLEASE do not claim that you've improved your grades since then if you haven't shown much improvement at all. I've also seen that quite a bit..."I've buckled down and improved my grades since X hardship" when they went from C-minuses to Cs. It honestly hurts more than helps your application and makes us wonder if the applicant just has really low GPA standards.

If it's any consolation to you...I went through a lot of crap in college and was too immature to deal with it properly, and ended up with a 2.7 GPA (science GPA was worse). Did a 1 year masters program (3.7 GPA), aced the 3-4 pre-reqs I still had to take, got a 95 PCAT and got into several pharmacy schools, including one that's fairly established (public university). However, I did get rejected across the board in California (woo!). So sub-3.0 GPA is not a brick wall if you really want that pharmacy degree.

Best of luck! Don't give up. And don't hesitate to send me a PM if you need any admissions advice.

Hopefully not. Any school that accepts someone with numbers like that should be ashamed.

edit: After browsing some other threads, admissions apparently are now concerned with quantity over quality so actually you probably have a pretty good chance at getting in. What a turn this profession has taken.

You often see a lot of negativity here on the forums. People are complaining and getting upset about how pharmacy school is becoming a business and schools are opening up like wildfire. The supply and demand for pharmacists is teetering out of balance and the future is up in the air. Obamacare is going to be putting a lot of strain on the health field in general and this really complicates things for us.

Regardless, do what you want to do. If you want to do pharmacy (i.e. you like learning about how drugs go through your body and affect your organ systems in different ways), then no one should be stopping you. I'm all for the notion that if you want to pursue a career, provided that you are willing to put forth the effort and time and have a solid level of social skills (this is specifically for pharmacy, for you), then you'll get there one day or another.

ahahah yeah what a douchebag ha! why should be ashamed? I know several people with 4.0s and 99 PCATs who didnt get in simply because they did not have the people skills.

bad study habits can be changed and GPA is only one part of of the package junior
