When medical schools do background checks, when do they do it? Do infractions show up? If you got a crime "reduced to an infraction" does that mean they originally charged you with a misdemeanor first and then expunged it, and then charged you with something new? Does that show up?

Infractions are harmless. Every time you get a traffic ticket, that's an infraction. I alone have four of them just for the past year. Most people have one or more.

As for the reduction, it depends. If you were charged with a misdemeanor, like reckless driving, but during the court session you reached an agreement with the prosecutor to try it as an infraction (in exchange for admitting guilt), then no, there isn't a problem there. Given the gravity of the matter, you should consult a lawyer to ensure that your case was indeed tried as an infraction.

lol i read "infarctions".

im ready to go to med school! 😛

My advice is to run a check on yourself with the same company the schools will ( I think all who applied got an email offering them the chance)

If you were charged with an misdemeanor and it was dismissed because it was reduced to an infraction- if will most likely show up like this:

count 1- charge: misdemeanor
conviction: dismissed
count 2- charge: infraction
conviction: disturbing the peace (or whatever it was)
description: paid $600 fine for reckless driving, peeing in public, j-walking, etc

or something like that- your best bet is to just be totally honest with the adcoms.

The unfortunate thing is that it happened AFTER I submitted amcas. I don't know how I feel about sending an update about having a small run-in with the law in the mean time...
