Has anyone taken that route. If yes than did the ABPMR recognize the internship without any problem. I am going to be doing an osteopathic traditional year. Are there any specific requirements about the number of IM, Peds or surgery months? And would the osteopathic board recognize my allopathic training?

The overwhelming majority of DO residency complete an osteopathic internship and then go to PM&R residency. There should be any problem except if you go to a PM&R program that starts at PGY1. If you do not complete a DO internship then you cannot practice in the states of PA, OH, WV, OK, and Fl. There are ways to get around that. I think it is called "Resolution 42." The AOA has been concerned about losing it members and therefore created this resolution.

Honestly, why bother applying and spending more money for MD internships when it is so much easier to get virtually any DO internship of your choice, even through the scramble? It is not as easy matching into a Prelim medicine or transitional year on the MD side.

I think every ACGME-accredited PM&R residency will have some sort of general guidelines as to what they will accept for an internship, however I have not found this to be a problem with DO internships whether they are pre-lim surgery/medicine or traditional.

DO internships in themselves have specific guidelines as to how many months of a certain area must be in your training. This can be annoying at times, but that is a different story.

If you complete a DO internship and do an ACGME residency, you will hopefully pass COMLEX Step 3, finish internship, send in your application/paperwork/money, then the osteopathic board of your state will generally be the one giving you a license. After that, you may want to be board-certified for your specialty in which case you will go to the ABPMR. Additionally, you may also get board-certified with the osteopathic version of the ABPMR which is the AOBPMR... however this is optional and can be expensive.

Btw, for future reference, the topic of osteopathic internship and MD residency requirements has been addressed multiple times on this board. Thanks.
