I'm a class of 2027 applicant who is dead-set on PM&R. I've been wondering how "pub" counting works in terms of ERAS stats. I saw that last year average amount of "abstracts, presentations, and publications" was 8.6, and I was like wtf how do people do that much stuff? However from talking to upperclassmen, it seems that people multi-dip into their projects, so I was wondering how my numbers would add up.

Project 1: Case Review Series. 1 oral presentation, 1 school presentation, 1 presentation at upcoming AAP + submitted abstract, 1 manuscript
Project 2: Case report. 1 local symposium presentation, resident who I worked on it with is presenting it at AAP and told me it counts for me + submitted abstract, 1 manuscript
Project 3: Full on project. By the time applying hopefully I'll have done 1 presentation at a national conference with abstract submission, 1 manuscript, and 1 local presentation .

What does this exactly count as?

More programs perform holistic review, so they actually look at variety and complexity of work. If I see the same case report presented three times that’s not going to count as much as two different case reports, in my book. I also give more weight to impactful projects or projects that clearly take investment. So would apply for leadership and volunteerism. If you play role in an impactful research project, even if it is unfinished…I have no problem seeing it as an experience. We want to bring in the most well rounded applicants, but it’s been my experience that there is little correlation between research in med school resulting in research in residency. I just want to know you’re capable and willing.
