Would someone be able to tell us whether Osteopathic graduates are put at a disadvantage since they do their PGY1 doing a traditional internship?
How does this affect acceptance to programs like the RIC, U of Washington, Temple, etc. ?

for anyone who knows about UPenn's categorical first year- can it be dually accredited or can DO's not apply for it?

the other DOs on this forum will probably be able to tell you but my understanding is that you can get AOA approval for categorical intern years if you wanted to apply for categorical positions. Otherwise, you can do an intern year anywhere then go to programs like RIC, U of W, Temple, etc. for PGY2-4 years.

In addition to what the previous posters said, one should have no bearing on acceptance to the other as you match into both your intern and residency position at the same time in your fourth year (albeit a month earlier for DO programs).

The only issue that remains is if you match into an categorical position and want/need to get AOA approval for your internship year. I have heard from several DO's who went this route and didn't have a problem, but it really seems to be program and/or location dependent. With only a few AOA PM&R programs in the country and a ton of DO's in AGCME PM&R programs, this situation is relatively common. I'm sure a few of the DO's on the forum will eventually chime in on their experiences.

I did my DO traditional internship at UMDNJ-SOM then PM&R residency at Jefferson. I had intern classmates at UMDNJ-SOM that did their PM&R residency at Temple and Harvard.

To clarify my question above, I was wondering about UPenn specifically. Did anyone get it dually accredited? I ask this because of the Pennsylvania law that you must do a DO internship. Or did that get changed?

This is all very good news indeed.
Thanks for the responses.

Jakki, PA is one of the 5 states that requires an Osteopathic internship to practice in THOSE states.
Are you asking in UPenn's program accepts you at PGY2?

So, when applying for AOA approval, is it pretty much an "Ask, and you shall receive," jump through paperwork hoops type of thing? Do people ever get turned down?

I've kind of been wondering along similar lines; will the action of choosing a top rated program that's ACGME be frowned upon by my Osteopathic alma mater? Personally, I hope to have quite the opposite effect, rather bring my OPP with me, not disassociate from my roots. In fact I'm observing programs that particularly embrace OMM and osteopathic principles and practice.

Further, I intend an OMM +1 before a fellowship,
AFTER my fellowship if it can be arranged.
