Do interviewers accept better looking students more often?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good looking gals aren't intimidating, unless they are extremely bright. If I meet a girl that is not that smart and she's hot, I'm not at all intimidated by her. Last year, actually like 2 years ago, I dated a girl that was very good looking and not too bright. At first, it was fun. Sex was great. But after a couple of months, I became bored, annoyed. I wanted to talk to her. She never watched the news, current events. She lacked depth.

So, a good looking girl is not terribly intimidating if she's not bright.

I have to admit that it is somewhat disconcerting how so many males have female avatars and so many females have male avatars.

😕

I understand the reasoning, but I have a (perhaps strange) habit of associating the SDNer with their avatar.
Which is perhaps REALLY confusing seeing as Totoro and other strange characters seem to exist here....

(love that avatar!!!!)
😉

Tofurkey-
Check out a book by - umm...I forget who it's by. Anyways, it's called Survival of the prettiest )(or "...the Pretty"), and the author is a Harvard pysychologist. I'm well into it, and I'll finish it after the MCAT. There's a lot of REAL interesting information in there about the realities of beauty, and what the impact of attractiveness is on society and reactions and perceptions.
The point is there's a section in there that says that there's really no ceiling for "too attractive" males, but that extraordinarily attractive females seem to hit a point of diminishing returns. Where are the foxy CEOs and leaders? So, T, you may actually be onto something if you think you've been discriminated against. My fee for this tidbit to you is a post with your photo, so we can see if you're too pretty or not😀

Rest of the Group-
Lots of studies show that infants will look at attractive people longer than unattractive, and that kids will pick photos of pretty folks as the smarter and richer.
I'm really intrigued by these facts....maybe I'll choose psychiatry.

<--- Do you guys think I'm good looking enough to be a doctor?😎

I find myself intimidated by hot stupid girls. I am physically attracted (of course... they are hot) but they are stupid so I know we won't have the same interests. If a girl is smart, I can usually relate and hence the intimidation factor from the hotness goes away.

I second that....let's see a pic!!

Yes, better looking people have advantages. But, that's why there are numbers like GPAs and MCAT scores.

If i was interviewing a very attractive female and she had the same statistics as another regular female...i would be impressed that the attractive female didn't allow her looks to preoccupy her mind and keep her from focusing on exercising her mind...I think that a lot of times extremely attractive girls are constantly rewarded for their looks from a young age and thats why they usually don't become academic superstars...but occasionally you do see one and its impressive in my opinion.

Your reason doesn't matter. What matters is that you'd pick the cuter one. All things being equal, people tend to pick the more attractive one.

Exact opposite. A friend of mine has 3.5 gpa, 29 MCAT, URM, no clinical experience, no volunteer, did a lot of partying, but is good looking. She was accepted to a top 10. Given, she is a URM so that probably had something to do with it. The schools average MCAT and GPA are 33 and 3.85 respectively. She is a flirt too. Although she will make a good doctor, I am sure there are many much more qualified people who probably should have had her spot, and I have wondered if she "flirted" her way in. But, that is the way life is. The best people aren't always picked for the job. It's not like is a horrible pick or anything either. I am happy she got in.

If you are a girl and good looking, it will help you out in just about every situation. However, I'm don't think it is this extreme for guys.

what kind of URM

oh this thread is sooooo depressing to me. maybe looks are the reason I got wait-listed at some many places . . .I definitely agree that attractive people tend to have the edge, even if it is only a slight one. I also think for medical school you are going to get dinged a little if you look out of shape, sad but true. There is such a huge body-image problem throughout the U.S. that is would be silly to think it doesn't apply to med school interviews.

But seeing as I am no babe myself I would like to say: More power to the average janes and joes!

My co-worker once said, "Oh but you must have charmed your way in at the interviews..." I dunno if that's a diss or a compliment. I'd like to think I earned acceptances in other ways...

How were they able to tell how good looking she was BEFORE she met with them? Also, who wrote her recommendations? I eman, if she didnt really get any ECs done, but had recs written by the Clintons, Condoleeza Rice, Ben Carson, and Paul Farmer, that would have a HUGE impact on her admissions, wont it?
