Hello All,

Applying to both MD/DO this cycle and the D.O. I shadowed had a big influence on my reasoning to pursue medicine. The physician has a paragraph in my PS which is why I feel like his LOR is necessary. I also have M.D. LoR already but am just curious if it would possibly hurt my application or draw some suspicion that I have a D.O. LoR on my MD app. Thanks.

It will not hurt your MD application to have a DO LOR. OTOH, there are less than a handful of MD schools that request a physician shadowing letter, so it won't help you either, unless you are fulfilling your college's committee requirements by having one.

Just to add,

Doctor do not generally think of of colleagues as MD or DO. They think of them as their specialty and dont really care or notice the degree. So having shadowed a DO is almost irrelevant. What kind of practice was it snd why did it have an influence on you

BTW, only premeds get concerned about the degree. In 95%+ of clinical medicine, doesnt matter if you are the MD, DO, DPM or DMD. You are the doctor in your speciality and that how colleagues and staff will treat you
I absolutely agree with you sir! The DO is a neonatologist who was kind enough to allow me to experience the NICU. I respect all equally and know that neurotic premeds and egomaniacs are the only ones that worry about the initials in front of their name, however I know that some MD/DO schools ask at interviews if the applicant is applying to Allopathic alongside Osteopathic and was overthinking.

Thank you everyone for your responses, I appreciate it. Best wishes to all.
