So I got an email from someone at __COM specifically asking me why they haven't received the letter from Dr. ________ yet. They said that the last day of interviews will probably be February 13th, but that they can't consider me for an interview until they received my DO letter.

Since the semester started, I have been by the clinic three times to encourage Dr. _________ to finish up my evaluations. I always just talk to a nurse/receptionist who calls back to his office. Last time he said that he would call me when he finished them. This was a week and a half ago. I want to go back by or call, but I am worried that he will get annoyed with me and write bad evaluations.

I really want some more interviews. The schools where I have already interviewed can't accept me without a letter.

Seriously, what should I do?

Seek out another DO in the area and get that letter asap. It doesn't have to be a long and lengthy letter. Mine was only a couple of lines long. I didn't even shadow my DO. The DO letter requirement is just a formality. Your numbers, ECs, and interview will determine your acceptance/waitlist/rejection.

I was in the exact same situation. It's hard to know what to do b/c you don't want to annoy this Dr., but you need the letter. I finally got my letter, but it took 4 months. I called and went to his office several times. What did it for me was the secretary, she knew I was desperate and she talked to the Dr. and he finally wrote the letter. At this point it is almost too late to find another Dr. to shadow...maybe you could send him a letter reminding him to quickly wirte your letter. I would keep calling and try tp emphasize how important this is to you and that you need this letter immediatley. Good Luck!!

I would call the DO and try to talk to him specifically and just tell him whats going on...either he'll write it or he'll get pissed and won't (which i dont see happening)

Good Luck

Andi_cvr,

Trust me, we ALL know how that goes...sometimes those letters seem to slip on the wayside of the list of things these docs have to do. If you don't want to keep begging him for the letter, you could call him and suggest that since he's so busy, you could write the letter yourself and he could just sign it. Swing by his office and pick up some paper with his office letterhead on it, go home and type up the letter, and swing by his office to get the signature. You could have it complete and in the mail on the same day, and he'd probably appreciate you saving him the time to think up things to write...especially if he doesn't know you that well.

Wow, somebody wants to get into medical school. I don't know what the adcoms at the schools would think if they found this out.

But you are certaintly motivated 👍

If you are in a very tight situation, perhaps you might want to consider asking if you could send them a letter from an MD.

Maybe you could tell them that the DO you were shadowing and hoping to recieve a letter from was a very busy individual and just hasn't had a chance to sit down and write a meaninful letter. Then you could ask them if a letter from an MD would be ok.

They might say no to an MD letter this late in the application process, but it's worth a try especially if you are in a tight situation.

I wish you the very best,

CatsandCradles,

In my post I did never said that this was something that I had personally done to get my recs. However, I do know of people that have done this for similar reasons as the OP...running out of time, and dealing with some hella busy DO's.

See if you can meet with him, so at least in the letter he can say, I met with so and so, and we discussed his or her aspirations and i sincerely feel he or she would be a great asset to your program. If that doesnt work, then i guess you can consider some of the other suggestions here. Another option is trying to contact a program director at an osteopathic hospital, has a lot of weight, and usually they are much more understanding of the whole application process. See if you can meet up with one. Good luck!

Do you guys think this letter that I left for the doctor is ok? I tried to be nice but demonstrate a sense of urgency at the same time. I also left him 2 cent stamps since I had given him old stamps back in November.

Dr. _______,

Thank you for completing evaluations and letters for me. I just have one more request. Could you fax the evaluation for __COM to this number as soon as possible: XXX-XXX-XXXX, then send the original by mail? They emailed me to let me know that February 13th may be their last interview day, and they cannot consider me for an interview without your evaluation.
Also, I have already been interviewed by WVSOM and LECOM-Bradenton, but both schools need your evaluation before they can make a decision of whether to accept me. All of the other schools have deadlines around March 1st, but of course the earlier my file is complete the better.
Thanks again for allowing me to shadow and for agreeing to do so much work for me. I really appreciate it.

My Name

I haven't heard from him, and I left him this note last week. I think I am going to set something up with another DO if I can. Would it be bad if schools ended up getting two lor's for me?

In this letter you did not ask him or his secretary to contact you after completing your request. So you really can't expect that someone will do so. If you gave it firectly to the secretary then try to work with her. She knows how to get the doctor to complete something like this.

2 DO letters is fine. I had this happen at one school and told them which one I preferred them to use when reviewing my application.

:luck:
