I wouldn't quite agree. Of importance to note: Is "HOW MANY" people actually went for something/applied versus how many got the spots. That might change some of your outlier views. Maybe not all ...but a lot more than yal may realize.
It is impressive and wonderful when anyone matches. When you all become 4th years you will see this more clearly.
But for example, when you see lets say, hypothetically, 4 DOs that got Derm or Urology this year, you also have to factor in HOW MANY ACTUALLY RANKED AND APPLIED for the spots. Oftentimes, fewer people/DOs than you realize actually go for these "competitive" spots dt fears, insecurities, negativism, insert any reason here, whatever you want to call it.
So I think it speaks even more volumes and highly in the percentiles if only (lets say hypothetically) 10 students applied and 4 out of 10 matched into Derm (thats 40% match success rate) than when you have a larger MD pool where 320 students apply and only 86 match (thats a 26.8% match success rate)....or whatever. Forgive my numbers but Im just making a point that maybe some of you haven't thought about.
4 out of 10 students applying who matched into MD spots (I.E. took away from MD applicants bc the MD applicants cant apply for both the Allopathic and the Osteopathic spots in Derm) is a TREMENDOUS accomplishment and actually makes it not look so outlandish. NOT SAYING IS IT EASY TO MATCH INTO THESE SPOTS . Just showing you technicalities of the match.
So you can not always say it is irrelevant or only the outliers that match into something, if, of all the osteopathic students in the US only 4 matched derm...well how many actually applied? Thats all Im saying. Maybe a whole bunch applied this year. I dont know. But if only a few applied and X number matched, then you just need to see what the percentages of match success calculate to be.
The AUA (Urology) match breaks this down wonderfully for all of us on their match results list. You get to see how many DO/MD/Female/Male/IMG applicants ranked urology versus matched, and you get a match success rate. I dont think Ive seen that for our general matches? If Im wrong Im sorry and please do show where I can find that info....
I just think thats awesome in general. Whether we had 15 DOs applying DO and MD derm or 30 and only 6/10 matched thats a 60%/20% match success! Very awesome!
