Just a bit curious. My school requires that med students complete a small amount per year. It's not a large amount by any means, but they pretty much require you to enhance your resume, I guess. I'm wondering if it's the same at other schools.

Edit: "require mandatory" lol... that was a bit redundant

Mine, thankfully, does not.

We do have some optional community service things we can do. But those are actually optional and not "optional".

No.

We have plenty of oppurtunities to do so though. Seems like a waste of time to require it, no residency gives a crap about it...

I'm at a "touchy-feely" school, I think that's why they require it. It's just another hoop to jump through in my eyes. I'd like to do mine during the summer after first year or something when I don't have to worry about learning stuff.

volunteering? what?

i thought those days where we pretended to care about that stuff were behind us

Mine does as well. But I can guarantee they don't do it so you have something on your residency.

The supposed basis behind ours is to understand the factors within a community that play a role in the health of its people. I have no problem with the few hours per year mandated, and I tend to volunteer more than that on my own.

Mine requires a 1 day service project with your clinical small group. Other than that no required projects... but that doesn't stop me from still doing some volunteer work (though not as much as I would like due to studying a lot more than in UG)

We have required service at the school I attend. Required 60 hours during the first two years. Instead of calling it community service though they call it "service learning."
