So I was reviewing some numbers for costs of different schools I applied to and I noticed that UIC which I was recently accepted to requires that students pay additional tuition for summer their D2-D4 years (about $8500 per year). I also noticed that schools like Iowa list tuition only for a 10 month term. So do some schools like Iowa get time off while other schools require courses during the summer? What would be advantages of going to school all summer? Seems like less time to study for boards, more tuition to pay, more likely to burnout? But also it could offer more clinical experience I suppose. Any thoughts?

Stony Brook has a set tuition per year which covers the entire academic year.

Year 1 usually starts at the end of August and ends at the end of June.
Year 2 usually starts at the end of August and ends in the middle of July.
Year 3 usually starts at the end of August and ends at the end of July.
Year 4 usually starts at the end of August and ends at the end of May.

Summer break is between the end of one year and the beginning of the next. The biggest vacation is between years 1 and 2. Between years 2 and 3 we study for the boards part 1. Between years 3 and 4 you can just chill, work on apps for residency, do externships, study for the boards part 2, etc but we really only have 3 weeks off.

Also, in years 2 and 3 we only have clinic for most of June and all of July so we really don't burn out during that time. It's the time BEFORE that where we'd burn out haha. Especially year 2.
