Do most schools require Ochem lab 2?

I was just wondering if anyone knew about this b/c I'm confused when I read some schools websites on ochem requirements. Anyone have some input on this? This might be a stupid question but I know some california schools don't require it...personally I think it it's a wast of time..I could take a different class that would actually help me prepare for dental school...

I agree that the lab is not a good learning experience. However, almost everywhere requires both semesters with labs.

Have fun with o-chem lab. It took up sooooo much of my time. I remember I had to go to lab twice a week for 3 hours each time. On top of that, I had to spend about 4 or 5 hours after each lab preparing my lab report as well as pre-labs. The pre-labs took forever as well along with digging up the acros organics book and writing down all the chemical properties of every single chemical used for the next lab along with lab procedures. Glad that lab is over with.

Actually quite a few schools do not require Ochem Lab 2. Pacific doesnt, and neither does U Penn. There are a couple others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. When it comes to looking for a schools pre-reqs, the Kaplan website has a really good resource for that.

i dont think most require 2 semesters of lab. I only had 1 quarter and maybe i'll have to go look to make sure i'm ok but I dont believe morst require more than this.

Bi*ch Bit*h B*tch, its not like you wont be spending a lot of time in lab in dental school... So it is a good start towards something. I believe most schools require 1 year of O-Chem, and labs. Its not that bad, it is also good for learning to retain material, what you learn first semester is utilized second semester, just like dental school. Take the class.

Ochem lab 2, at least at my school, is a lot easier than the first sem. You basically have to accomplish a separation or synthesis or something with 3 unknowns and once you are done you are done. You set your own schedule and can finish a couple weeks early if you are good.

Then again Orgo 2 lecture is another story.

Yeah, don't complain. Orgo lab here is 9 hours a week (2 four hour sessions and a lecture) + write ups/pre-labs and how ever much time you spend taking melting points during other lab sections. And the real kicker is that we don't get anymore credit towards graduation for it than a liberal arts course.

I actually like the course, though, and I feel like it will help me with my clinical skills just because we have to be on our toes all the time and really have to know what we're doing when we get there. There's also a sense of pride when you get a good product--you get to see that the science physically worked out and the time that was put into it was worth it.

i took orgo 1 (3 crd), orgo 2 (3 crd), orgo lab 1 (2crd), and orgo 2(might take 1 crd). makes it 8 crd....

Thanks..I'm still confused b/c when we take ochem 1, ochem 1 lab, and ochem 2 with out lab it's 8 semester hours (the requirement for a few schools that I'm interested in). I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow and find out for myself.

ochem lab two sucks!!!

Besides spending 8 hours/week for assigned lab + lecture, I had to spend an additional 4 hours coming in and finish up the experiments and do characterizations, IR, mp, NMR, UV-vis, polarimetry, etc.! The prelab/postlabs and 20 page formal paper and presentation all add up to one hell of a waste of time for 4 units..lol

Don't take it if you don't need to, simple as that.

To make things more confusing, I am on quarters and I was told to take the first two labs but not the third. You have to be a chem major/biochem major to even take the 3rd lab at the UofO.

i think you should take it to be on the safe side. besides, most schools require it anyway. people here complain about lab classes, but they were pretty fun for me. the write-up is the only pain. enjoy!

Simple Mr. Math, different schools weight their classes differently. My Ochem lecture is 3hrs and lab is 2hrs. So, if I take two lectures and one lab (can you do this math? 3x2 + 2 = 8) I have a total of 8hrs 🙂 Your school just sucks in that regard.

I do appreciate good sarcasm. I needed a good laugh before I turn in for the night. Now my incompetent math skills will haunt me while I sleep. I wish my OChm I lab counted as 2 credits. My school sucks at football and now class weighting.

Well, how much actual time do you spend in Ochem Lab? I know I "literally" spend 6hrs a week in it, making it hardly worth the 2 units (2hrs of ochem lab lecture). Not to mention the assignments we get--total pain in the butt. If your ochem lab is as time consuming as mine, i REALLY feel bad for ya.

Haha, nice. Yeah, I finally ended up using the acros website at the end of the semester for all my pre-labs. It's a great source. Hope anyone else taking O-chem lab finds this helpful.
P.S. if click on "Chemical Search." It has this feature where you can draw out a structure if you don't have the name, and it will search that structure. Pretty helpful stuff!

Our school doesn't even have a football team.


Then again i'm not sure it would be any better to go to UB and have the worst D1 school in the country for all time.

in the original question you wondered how ochem lab 2 cld help you. it is actually a very important course...it helps you understand the properties of organic compounds...this will come in handy in the future because many materials used in dentistry is made from organic compounds so it is important to understand how the react with one another....when i complained to my dentist about having to take ochem...that was her response to me. Which actually makes sense if you think about it.
