Here is my story.
6 V, 9 PS, 9 BS, Q.
3.7 GPA

I have been on this site from time to time and I think it can be very helpful. I would like to add my 2 cents. I was accepted to a top tier school last year in the south east.

The MCAT is used as a screening tool by admissions committees mainly to select for interviews. Once the interview is offered, MORE or LESS, the playing field is leveled and the MCAT is no longer as big of a factor. Here, a very strong gpa can have a big impact, as can research, or work experience. Some schools will weigh the MCAT more than others but there are MANY out there that use it for what it is, just one test on one day. It allows the admissions office to screen through 6000 applications and to punch in data to expeditiously crunch out interview decisions. But not all schools use this system and some do really evaluate your application and letters prior to deciding your interview candidacy.

I have read many of you who have a score of 24-28 and feel that the door is shut on your chances (some even are scrapping the application process altogether this year). Take my advice, dont do it. Apply broadly, now is not the time to save money. A low MCAT DOES NOT mean you wont make an excellent physician and you need to make this clear in your application!!

Dont underestimate the power of phone calls by the applicant to stress ones desire to interview. Make yourself available. "I can come up at any time if there is a cancellation." Send emails to the adcom committee director. If you get a rejection, so what. Probably going to come anyways if your did nothing.
I believe a big part of this process is about being persistent and going after what you want, not being docile and waiting by your email for offers.

Hope this helps. Good luck as the process gets underway

Thank you so much for this post. Even scoring 3 points higher this August from April's score, I am worried. I thought my 27Q (new score) would get me a few interviews (already had one) but sometimes this forum is quite humbling.

anyway, thank you again. I will proceed with new hope!

Are you suggesting that people with un-competitive MCAT scores call up the schools they wish to get interviews at, and ask for an interview?!

That seems kind of ridiculous, but very effective if taken the right way by whomever you speak with....

Don't listen to WinBig. He's most likely a troll (someone who purposely posts to stir up trouble) because he's got 0 past posts. You need a good GPA and MCAT to be accepted for 90% of the applicants regardless of where you apply.

thanks for the good luck,
you're story is a bit inspiring to me
I got this freaky scores that
I was really concerned for
I guess we almost are in the same situation
I m not leaving my hopes behind
and that is it.

stop trolling you don't get in school with that kind of MCAT unless you were on a med program right out of highschool and didn't really need to take the MCAT..

people studying hard and getting a good score is necessary and I believe anyone is capable if they really dedicate themselves.

hold on now guys, don't bash winbig too much.

I was just talkin to a girl today who made a 24, and she just got an interview at a school..

Anything's possible, I guess.

The 24 person must have been a rare circumstance, and I would never be brazen enough to admit that 'connections' and 'money' are never a factor in this.

I've got a 27 and am not holding my breath.

That is not true. It really depends on the school. For the schools that I interviewed at, I was told that the Interview is an important part of one's application but it was not the only thing used for admittance. They still review your GPA, MCAT, EC when it comes to make the decision.

Guys, do not criticize. My story is much better.

I TOO HAVE A STORY OF HOPE!!

I now attend The Chuck E. Cheese School of Medicine and will obtain an M.D. in the year 2014. I feel humbled yet I know there is a lot of work ahead. Class of 2014!!!

We have a small class but a great one. Here is a picture with the class of 2014! (me and my wife are top left, she is not in the class of 2014. Professor Cheese and his wife are on the right). Little Johnnie on the bottom right is a gunner.
