Well, there are the people that still respond "You mean...like a Chiropractor?" when you mention Osteopath.
Ive had people refuse listen to me or take care of their rx's at walgreens because I wasn't white. Had a patient outright refuse counsel from pharmacists because she wasn't a man. Does that mean I should hate myself and not try to help people? That statement above has no meaning whatsoever. I don't give a flying **** if you dont think Im a real doctor. I have 90% or so other patients that will let me take care of them. There are ignorant, stupid, racists *******s everywhere (even in admissions) and it shouldn't deter one from pursuing DO school when you have a much much MUCH higher chance of practicing than if you went caribbean.Ouchies.. I wish I had something witty to say to that.. but I dont.. that just out right sux..
and is kind of true...
I know more than one person who refuses to see DO doctors on the grounds that "I want a doctor taking care of me who was smart enough to get into a real medical school."
I'm not saying the DO programs are bad, I'm just saying that you will have to put up with attitudes like the above for the rest of your career.
Haha. The response, of course, is "Ok let me go find you one." Then go get them an MD who graduated from a Carib school because his grades weren't good enough for admission to DO school. How is having elitist *****s self-select to not be your patients a downside for DO's?

A trend in the match at the moment (which will only get worse as Allopathic class sizes increase) is the number of foreign (carib) and DO grads that are not matching into MD residencies.
This year 93% of US MD grads matched.
70% of US DO grads that applied for the MD Match matched.
48% of Students from Carib or other Foreign Schools matched.

I wish that elitist hadn't become known as a pejorative term. It's quite sad and angering that the egalitarian movement has succeeded in infecting much of the elite with their virus. 😡How is having elitist *****s self-select to not be your patients a downside for DO's?

If you go primary care, it won't make a difference because you have to meet a certain "quota" so to speak of patients and will have roughly 30 min/patient. So, if someone doesn't want you because you're not a real doctor you can slowly walk outside and laugh for 28 minutes with your nurses/staff and then go back inside and tell them you looked up some "real" doctors and give him a printed out google search of MDs in your area.I just had talk with my dad, who happens to be an MD. I mentioned that I may not have the grades to get into an Allopathic school and may go into Osteopathic medicine instead. He said, so what? Then he mentioned two of the doctors here in my city, one is an orthopedic surgeon, the other is a cardiologist theyre both probably the richest doctors here. I didnt even know they were DOs. But i said, I want to go into Family Medicine and do primary care and probably wont get as many patients because I dont have the MD title. He said, I highly doubt thought, and plus, you dont want those kind of patients anyways hahaha!
I hope you, and others making snide comments like yours, realize that doing such a thing to a patient only serves to be a disservice to you and your profession. You want to be looked at as a real physician? Act like one. There apparently has been little done on the patient-physician end to legitimize yourselves, and I can assure you, acting like an ass to a patient will only reinforce what they think and they'll tell all their friends and neighbors and it won't serve anyone any purpose to create and perpetuate this type of an environment for yourself and fellow DO's. This all comes from the inferiority complex and wanting to "balance things out a bit".If you go primary care, it won't make a difference because you have to meet a certain "quota" so to speak of patients and will have roughly 30 min/patient. At the end of the day, we're supposed to provide healthcare as best as we can. If the patient doesn't accept it, give them their options, WHICH IS YOUR DUTY AS A PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU TOOK A PLEDGE TO DO, then if it doesn't work, see them on their way. Let your ability turn them around.
I agree. Not that I think the OP would actually do what they stated but such comments, no matter how serious they may be, hurt more than they help when it comes to the perception of DO to those that may happen upon this thread. Keep in my that to some people, the internet is seirous business, not everyone can understand/appreciate a joke. 🙂I hope you, and others making snide comments like yours, realize that doing such a thing to a patient only serves to be a disservice to you and your profession.
