I guess I should be as honest as possible in order to get the most honest answer...
I received an Academic Violation of the Honor Code for plagiarism last year. The details are really muddled, and the events really just did not play in my favor. I have a letter from the teacher who brought up the violation against me explaining the circumstances and at this point, she also believes that the violation was unjust, but the College feels it is too late to change anything now (which is pretty ridiculous).
I was just wondering if anyone knows of people still getting in after receiving an academic violation. It happened my Freshmen year in Gen Chem, and I retook the class already and did fine in it. Besides that, my grades are on track and I'm planning on taking the DATs next January.
Do I still have any chance of getting in? Obviously, my choices are already really limited...honestly, I just want to get in somewhere (shooting for MCG because I'm a GA resident).
Any advice, suggestions, ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

Here are my stats...

Sophomore
Biology and Economics - Double Major
GPA - 3.2
DAT - Scheduled to take in January 2008
Currently shadowing and working in a dental office
Planning on attending the New Jersey Dental School Pre-Dental Program

I personally do not know of anyone in this sort of situation, but I believe that there is an area on the dental school application that gives you a chance to explain any such violations. Also, if you are now in good standing with the professor now, you may want to consider having him or her write one of your letters of recommendation if you feel they would give you a good recommendation and perhaps shed some light on the situation and how you have grown and matured since then.

This hurts your application but doesn't kill you. Do your best to bring up your grades and do well on your DAT and you will have a shot. A 3.2 plus the violation might do you in, but if you can do well these next few semesters your application will be improved and schools are willing to excuse past mistakes as long as you have shown improvement and maturity since then. Also, make sure you apply early and to a good number of schools. Good luck.

so you cheated in chem?

I strongly think that adding research to your list of experiences wouldn't hurt, especially you're only a sophomore.. and of course, do extremely well on your DAT.

I was accused of forging a signature on a lab report in chem lab. I know it sounds sketch, but I can honestly say I didn't do it, but there wasn't really any evidence to suppose otherwise. After talking to the lab TA who brought up the incident, she truly believes that I wasn't the one who forged the signature. We tried to go to the student government about it, but apparently there's a one-week deadline to submit any appeals, which is pretty messed up I think.

Thanks for the advice, I'll def. look into some research opportunities. Everyone I've talked to said as long as I show positive progression in my grades and whatnot, I should have a shot. So I'm working on that and trying to throw in a few more Science electives and hopefully do EXTREMELY well on the DATs.

Any other advice still greatly appreciated!

apply early thats the best advice anyone can give

this is my second cycle and i've learned a couple of things along the way. most important and relevant to your question:

1. if one part of your application is weak, you must then shine above and beyond in all other aspects of your application. and believe me, it WILL make up for your weak link. Certain schools are a bit "forgiving," so you'll make it to d-school.

2. keep your hopes up and check sdn periodically. if you check this forum regularly, you'll go mad.

Good luck

people make mistakes and whether you did it or not it will be a black mark. We are all human however and this shouldn't effect you that much. Just keep plugging away.

Yeah, a friend of mine recently got into 3 schools. She also had a forgery violation. She explained it very nice on her AADSAS application. Don't tell too much, just tell enough.

Thanks for all the advice and support! Knowing that others have been admitted with the same circumstances gives me a lot of hope. But you're right...it only makes me have to try WAY harder to make my application as strong as possible.
