I have three questions:

1. Is anyone apply to DO/PhD programs?

2. How does this program compare to MD/PhD programs

3. How many DOs actually go into academic medicine

A few months ago I was attempting to ask the same question. Im into research but not competitive for MD PhD. It seems that there are very few students in DO PhD programs, and the programs themselves are not as sought after. As far as I could tell, none of the programs are funded by the NIH (Even though some schools call their programs MSTP). So, most likely you will end up paying for your education unless the school itself helps you out some. As far as there being practicing DO PhDs... I found a few that were departmental heads and others seemed to be getting just as many grants as MD PhDs. I have personally decided against applying for DO PhD because the schools that offer the program seem to not have top-notch research programs.. Id recommend applying to MD if you can get in and attempt to take a "back door" approach by asking for admittance to the program after your first year of med school. Good luck

If reputation is a concern, you can go get your Ph.D elsewhere first and then enter medical school whether it be DO or MD. I'll be getting my Ph.D before entering medical school, and I'll be DO Ph.D.

Hey drZ

I am getting one of those too. I tried collecting stamps off cereal boxes but I lost them. So instead I am doing it the hard way at a competitive institution.

Wow.. we are going to be so old by the time we get done.

BTW.. you can do a PhD after medical school. Also if you have a DO you can work for NIH afterwards and qualify for 15k/year tuition payback program.

good luck with that.

You can do DO/PhD at UMDNJ-SOM and get it all paid for. Now that is something to think about.

Good to hear from you docbill. I guess you'll be defering for a year? I have to wait till next year to start since my PI is being very unprofessional these days. We'll be old by the time we enter and finish.

MSU has a DO/PhD program, and I think that PCOM might have one as well. I know there is another.

PI being very unprofessional or difficult.. NOOoooooooooooo! What a surprise? Most PI try to milk everything out of student... especially one that is producing.

BTW.. just to go back to OP. Do a search on SDN. We talked about this before. OSUCOM, TCOM also has a PhD/DO program.

UNECOM, will be starting one soon.

BUT, again my suggestion is do a PhD after if you really would like one.
It would be better. You can do clinical and Basic Science, cause you will be able to do clinical experiemnts yourself. Also you won't be pushed around by PIs. Some places you may be able to squeese it into your residency. Everything can be arranged if you are creative.

Alright that is all for now.

Ohio University has a DO/PhD program too. They have a lot of areas of research too because of the attached undergrad campus. They do pay for part of it, but not all of it I think. If you search for the thread, DO/PhD programs were discussed pretty thoroughly a few months back, in terms of funding, what schools have them, etc. 🙂

I thought of that but I grew up in stratford NJ. So that is not one of my choices

I posted this in the MSTP forum a few months ago:

UMDNJ's program covers the medical school tuition too? I didn't know that. Pretty cool if that's the case.

I know KCUMB is starting it's Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences program this Fall and in a few years it's planning to offer a PhD as well.

I;m applying DO/PhD this year and I can tellyou for a fact that if you're form a group underrepresented in medicine, you CAN get NIH to pay for it with a decent stipend to boot!

Also, I'm currently doing a fellowship at NIH and they actually pay back 35K/year and are DO friendly. Definitely something to think about!

Hey 1Path,
That is much more generous than what I heard.

What do you mean if you are doing DO/PhD and Underrrepresented group? Minority you mean? Also do they pay for DO/PhD or just scholarship during your PhD portion. Difinitely something interesting. I would love to know more.

Also, fellowship at NIH pay's back 35k a year??? WOW.. I heard it way 15 to 20 per year. You sure it is 35k. I knew that they are okay with DO's doing fellowship for tuition pay back.. but I did not know that much.

What do you mean, your doing a fellowship? Fellowship is usually for MD/DO/DDM or PhD's. Do you have a medical / graduate degree already?

I would not mind doing another PhD if they will pay my tuition and stipend. It would be like doing a Fellowship.

Free education is hard to come by though espicially when you earn 2 degrees.

That is trueeeeee...

NJ or MSU would be an excellent place to do a DO/PhD.

Heck if they let me I would of applied there. BUTTTT NOOOOO they don't allow Canadians. #$%^#$^

Underepresented group = those faces you almost NEVER see in medicine, African American, Puerto Rican, Native American, ect.

The NIH money covers tuition and fees for ALL the years you're in the program

Absolutely sure, I know one person whose getting it now and another who got it a few years back.

I have a master's degree but NIH has fellowships at all levels of training form BS to MD/PhD. Unfortunately it's pretty dam hard to get you foot in the door around here, but well worth it if you do.
