I am concerned about my chances of getting accepted in KY-COM. I will provide my stats and what I have done. Also, is it true that Pikeville requires a letter from a DO otherwise you have 0 chances of getting accepted? I was born in Puerto Rico, and English is not my first language. I came to the US 4 years ago and learned the language as quickly as I could (lots of practice!). That being said, I am a URM, I am also a resident of Kentucky. My cGPA= 3.5 sGPA= 3.3 and non-science GPA= 3.7. My MCAT was sucky, I don't want to make up excuses for it, it just was. Here is my breakdown P=8 , V=6, B=9, T=23.
Now, I know that some of you will recommend to retake the test, which I am not scared of. I could do that, however, I like to go by stats and not by gut feelings. I have taken multiple practice MCATs, and I have done well in both physical and Bio sciences. However, in all 20-something MCATs that i have taken for practice, my verbal score is never greater than 6-7. This is really frustrating. I have tried and practiced a lot. I would hate my dream of becoming a doctor to fall apart over a language-barrier issue. I can write very well, it is just the comprehension of such complicated passages in such little time that gives me some trouble.
Here are some other ECs you may want to know for replying to this thread. I have done research (1 year and a half), I have shadowed (multiple doctors, all MDs), i am going to shadow a DO and hopefully get a letter from him. Is this DO letter a "must have" for pikeville?
Sorry for the longest post ever. Having said all this, what do you think my chances are ?

I would say probably about 100%

Before I began this process, I thought Pikeville was my first or second choice because I thought I was a perfect fit for their mission and program.

Two months later, I have three acceptances.

Still not a word from Pikeville.

Why am I sharing this story? As another example showing that this whole application process is wholly unpredictable.

I think you'll probably get into Pikeville, although it may be late in the process because this process is wholly unpredictable.

I wouldn't assume anything these days. Apply broadly.

Have you applied to KYCOM? Here are the requirements from their website:
I have, the application has processed. I am waiting on secondaries. I am aware of all the prereqs needed to get in. What I wasn't sure of, and asked about, was my chance to actually get in having completed all those prereqs.

I would say probably about 100%
Do you go to Pikeville? I find hard to believe that with my stats I have 100% shot (statistically means I have a guaranteed spot for next year's class). I need serious answers, please. Not trying to be mean or anything...

Thanks Tirian, I know Pikeville has really low standards when it comes to MCAT, but somehow I was/am a little worried. Wouldn't my low verbal score be a turn-off for them?

I have. I have applied for as many schools as my limited wallet has allowed me me to. Hopefully one gives me a shot. I know Pikeville is biased towards Kentucky residents, which is a good thing for me.

Hopefully you have another writing sample in there that demonstrates your literacy.

Your biology score is a bigger predictor of your success on the COMLEX or STEP 1 exams. Your verbal is a better predictor for clinical performance, STEP 2, things like that, so keep sharpening your skills.

Get that DO letter.

Where else did you apply?

Did you apply to PR school? You have a shot at some of the PR school...

I'm sorry about that. I thought you had asked if a DO letter was specifically required to apply to KYCOM. I figured you hadn't applied since a DO letter isn't absolutely required based on the info in the CIB and on their website.

Their average MCAT score is 24. While I wouldn't say that you have a 100% chance, you have a chance at an interview invite.
No worries, thanks for the reply.

Applied to Lake Erie, Philadelphia DO school, and West Virginia. Are you pre med too or have you gotten in somewhere already? Thanks for all the replies..

I don't want to study in PR, ironically haha, I feel like DO school graduates have better chances in residency programs, plus my bilingual status will definitely help a little when it comes to that. Being Puerto Rican I could probably go there easily, but still, I want to study here. If no DO school takes me, I will eventually go to PR, I am not changing my career choice over a couple rejections. Bottom line, PR is not an option for me, at least not for now.
