i am assuming that most dental students will be renting apartments in the area, and i know some schools (like uconn) will switch you to in-state tuition after 2 years living in the state. i also want to know how hard it is to establish in-state residency for pitt, anyone want to comment?

They tell us at the beginning of the semester that it's rather hard to get in state tuition, you have to go and plead your case in front of a committee. One way you can argue for in state tuition is if you went to undergrad in PA, one of my friends did this and he got it, that's 8k off a year. Otherwise, they say that maybe one person gets it a year.
