Hey! I'm interested in practicing medicine as well as teaching in med school. Do any of you know if you need to have a PhD in order to teach, or a masters in education? Is an MD degree sufficient?

MD or PhD is sufficient to teach. There are basic science faculty that only have PhD teach med students as well. For clinical stuff you will need MD, but not PhD. You don't need a masters in education.

You most certainly do not need a PhD in order to be a professor of the medical practice. You've pretty much defined 2/3 of academic medicine where clinicians have responsibilities to treat patients, teach students, and often are also involved in research.

However, some things to consider:

(1) Academic Doctors get paid SIGNIFICANTLY less then their counterparts in private practice.

(2) Getting a faculty position, believe it or not, is MORE competitive than getting into medical school (from what I've heard)...be ready for a long stressful road if this is the career you REALLY want to follow.

I have had a passion for teaching for a very long time. But, I also love mediciine. So, why not combine the two? How competitive is it to get a position as a faculty member at a med school? Do the schools take into consideration the med school that you graduated from, or do they look at experience more?

Is this REALLY the important thing, if teaching medicine is the OP's dream? 😡

Probably both. My brother's done research and had publications and awards up the wazzoo and did a fellowship at Stanford, and they liked him so much they invited him to stay on to be a clinical instructor. But as someone else has said, the pay is pretty low. So after a year, he left to practice fulltime. Gotta pay off those debts!

Come on now...all I was saying is something the OP should be aware of...its a reality...personally I think that pursuing a career in academic medicine as a faculty member involved in teaching is extremely noble and I wish the OP the best of luck.
