I took USMLE step 2 CK and CS after submitting my application, so my scores were not sent to programs. Are there any programs that require Step 2 scores before the match, or do most programs require it before you start? I couldn't find any information on the websites of the places I interviewed at. Most websites say they need USMLE scores, but don't specify whether they need Step 2.

I believe they need scores before you start. Not before match. I hope this helps

I was advised that not releasing your scores is NOT a good move. I was told by a PD with a lot of knowledge about matching that programs will tend to assume the worse if you dont release your scores. So I would say you should send them.

From my experience programs are happy if you send the Step2 scores, but will not knock you for not sending them. Many people don't take Step 2 early so programs will not always use the score to determine ROL, unless there is a tie for a slot, then the spot may go to the person with a good Step2 score providing the other has a lower Step2 score. It would be hard to use it as a tie breaker if only one person has a score as the other may wind up with a higher score by waiting until the stress of interview season is over to take the test.

My advice is to hold off on releasing the score until you know you passed, then release it if you want. Remember, everyone has to have taken and passed Step2 prior to starting residency.
