Hi Everyone,

I have a quick question about getting a letter of recommendation from a DO. Is that absolutely necessary; and if so, who (what type of DO doctors) did you ask? I want to apply to some DO schools but I am not really sure about who to ask for a recommendation; any ideas?

Each school have their own policy so you need to visit the school's websites and see what they say. If you live in a state with DO schools it should be easy to get a DO letter. ER DO's are easy to reach if volunteer in their hospitals.

I was thinking of getting a LOR by shadowing my family doctor who is a D.O. I have been wondering would this be a conflict of interest or totally Kosher. Any opinions?

I think it's totally kosher. If your family doctor is willing to write a glowing LOR for you, then that's great. Take it and be happy. 🙂

Hey, I do live in a state that has a DO school so I will look at their website for some info. I was just wondering though how people get LORs if they don't know any DOs really well but still want to attend a DO school.

You can ask the DO if you can shadow him/her for a certain period of time. If you're pressed for time, I would advise explaining your situation and asking if they are willing to write a LOR before you show up at their doorstep and work for a couple of months. If all is well, and the DO knows you better, he/she can write you an awesome LOR.

I went on the AOA website and found some DO's that have practices near where I live so I think I am going to give them a call ASAP! Thanks for all of your replies and help.

That's a good idea! I didn't know any DO's so I just went to the phone book/online and looked some up. You might have to contact quite a few before you get a response. Don't get discouraged, it will work out. Good luck

I hope that I can shadow someone soon! I have to admit that I didn't really know much about DO's before I started applying. However, I just finished reading a lot of information about the schools, their teaching style etc. and I find myself truly interested. I can't wait to shadow someone and talk to them about their experiences.

Just a heads up, some schools require a DO letter from one who is NOT related to you, so check individual schools on that.
