Hello, I just had a quick question about DO residency. What is the benefit of doing an allopathic residency if DO and MD are becoming so similar in most specialties?

I would be interested in staying DO the whole way. Would going to a DO residency put me back in someway?

Thanks

DD

Maybe one reason is location. I don't think there are any DO residency programs in MN, so that could be a reason for me to do MD instead.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'putting you back.'

But then again, it doesn't really matter what you mean, because I'm still going to say no, it doesn't.

As the previous post said, location is a big part of it too. Also, if you want to go to a super competitive residency, it increases your odds of getting in by applying to allopathic and osteopathic programs. But once you're in to either, you're good to go.

Thank you for the quick reply, that answered my question 👍

You may have some problems if you plan on a fellowship. I believe there are only a few DO fellowships (relative to MD fellowships) and they sometimes prefer someone who has done an MD residency. There was a thread about this I believe in the Osteopathic section.

Why would DO fellowships prefer someone who did an MD residency? That doesn't make sense.

May I also add it may depend on what you want to do. For instance, I am doing FP and an osteopathic residency would be able to have didactics
in OMM and the core principles of DO medicine. If you want to keep upwith omm you need to go to a DO residency or go to conferences yearly about it.
Best wishes!!

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant that if the OP wanted to do a fellowship that there are a lot more MD fellowships and the MD fellowships prefer someone who has done a MD residency. If he wanted a DO fellowship of course they probably care more about them doing a DO residency--although in the thread I mentioned I believe someone said that is was possible to do an MD residency and then DO fellowship. It might be wise to check that out.

Does anyone know if DO residencies exist for all TYPES of specialties?
If yes, is there a convenient list somewhere that tells us which ones are included/excluded?

i.e., if I am interested in ophthalmology would I have to take the USMLE and sign up for an MD residency or do DO residencies for ophthalmology also exist?

I understand that people take the USMLE so that they can apply more broadly, but it's not clearly stated anywhere if some specialties only come in MD form or not....

Thanks in advance for the help!

I believe pathology is the only specialty that is not available.

Where would one look to see mean COMLEX scores for different specialties?

It's my understanding that info is not available in a published manner. I imagine certain programs may have it but it's not info I've ever seen on SDN. That being said the student president at my school sent an email to us a while back saying the issue was being pushed but who knows if that will come to fruition...

For the MD match though isn't there the outcomes report or something that state the mean USMLE scores for people who matched into certain specialities?

I know that doesn't help for DO match, but it may be interesting to go over...if what I'm thinking of exists.
