Was wondering if residency programs tend to have access to speech recognition software for documenting in the EHR? I am on a radiology rotation, and I see how transcriber free dictation could boost efficiency greatly, but I've only seen medical residents type their notes. I looked on amazon, and the cost of software for medicine purposes is like 1600 bucks, and it would be pointless to spend all that money since I wouldn't be able to install it on every workstation I might come across. But I would have no problem investing in a microphone if this resource was generally available, if not underutilized

Our program now uses dragon dictation which is a transcriber-free dictation program. It can be used on any EMR as long as the computer has the dragon program installed and there's a dragon device. We just started rolling this out last year, so not all residents use it because they're not used to it. More of our interns use it because we had them trained earlier on. This came about because the EM residents were used to it on the adult side and it's definitely helped with efficiency

Double edged sword. With dragon you can talk but I've never heard anyone say "wow, dragon seems to be working very well today and is picking up everything I say." In addition, my generation is when they started teaching typing in schools so many can type faster than they can speak. When typing it is easy to also use templates and shortcuts much faster. In 3rd year, my goal for residency was to set up and use dragon early to get used to it and fast. In 4th year, my goal is to set up templates and shortcuts to make my job easier.

My program has a dictation service so you can dictate most notes into the computer, but few residents actually use it because it takes a while to get used to dictating and most of us feel that we could type something up faster.

I hated dictating to the phone that someone then types out and sends to me a couple hours (days!!) later... Half the time it would look all sorts of weird and I couldn't remember what I was trying to say. Plus I can type almost as I can dictate honestly so it's faster and then it's done and I don't have to go back and cosign the note. I have played with dragon at work some. I have mixed feeling. I like it but I can definitely work just as fast without it...
