Hi all,

I am from California and applying this cycle. I am planning to apply to mostly top tier (some mid tier) DO schools and low tier MD schools, but I have no clue which schools I should exactly apply to.

Asian, I immigrated here 8 years ago.
cgpa: 3.5
sgpa: 3.4
mcat: 506

2 years of plant research experience, I will become a co-author in a paper.
I volunteered at a hospital for ~150 hrs.
I volunteered at a street medicine org for 3 months.
I am starting my job as a medical scribe at a ped clinic this June.
I tutored for intro-bio class at my university.
I am going to shadow for a DO doctor starting next week.

Thank you so much for your help!

Your cGPA and sGPA are lower than average for even the top tier DO schools. Your MCAT is about average. I wouldn't risk just mostly applying to top tier. Throw in also new schools and some more mid-tier apps in there.

To give you a frame of reference, I only got interviews and acceptances for two 'top-tier' DO schools with a 3.7 GPA and 31 MCAT (one was IS.) I had a lot better success with mid and low tier DO schools. I had significant ECs, with DO letter, committee letter, the works. Being Asian will slightly put you in a disadvantage, as did I.

Also, remember this was last cycle. It will get more competitive this cycle. Averages keep going up.

I advise to not waste your money on MD applications. I learned that the hard way with stats and ECs better than or equal to yours last year. California is a real SoB as far as med schools go.

I think you are an competitive DO applicant. Apply broadly and you will be fine.

Being from California makes the whole "apply to your state school" think difficult when you've got a boarderline/low end MCAT. I think you're cruising for DO schools so apply broadly AND early and you'll get some love!

Thank you for the response! One more question. Although I will start shadowing next week, I don't know if I can get a LOR from the DO doc in June when I am submitting my application, will that hinder my chances? I might be able to get one in September or so.

ECs are lackluster, but I suggest:

Temple
Jefferson
Drexel
WVU
Rosy Franklin
MCW
SLU
Loma Linda (but read their list of don'ts)
Albany
NYMC
VCU
U VM
EVMS
Oakland-B
UCD
UCI
UCR IF you're from the Inland Empire
Any DO school.
