I know nobody believes LOIs but I was wondering at state schools or smaller schools where you can actually meet with a Dean for feedback it helps to get to know the admissions committee. Either before or after applying. State schools especially are invested in picking candidates from the state so they will later serve their local communities. I am aware top schools like Harvard and even Case couldn't care less to get to know their applicants. Especially re-applicants.

I started thinking about this when I stumbled upon this MDApps profile: http://www.mdapplicants.com/profile.php?id=6325

And Dr. Peterson from UC Irvine seems to certainly admire persistence! That girl sent multiple update letters and was commended on her persistence. "I got into UC IRVINE!!! OMG!! I got in. It pays to persist. I sent the original letter to get off hold for interview, another letter of intent after my interview but before decisions and then another after I got waitlisted. It paid off - Dr. Peterson even said it was my persistence and desire to attend that got me in."

I'm just wondering making appointments to review my own application at my state schools would help in anyway?

It might help, but probably the effect would be very minor. Remember, there is a very thin line between being persistent, and being annoying. One meeting to review your app at any point of the cycle is fine, but badgering them with LOIs after each step would be WAY too much. LOIs are silly IMHO, you applied to their school...of course you're interested in the school.

So would it be a bad idea request to meet with an adcom of my state prior to applying? Or would it be better to hold off if I don't hear anything from schools by Oct/Nov of the app cycle. I just figured that if adcoms were willing to meet with their applicants and help them improve their app they're invested in seeing them become an actual student at their school.

They do, but it's not going to overcome a poor app.

I got an interview invite after getting in touch with a school that I hadn't heard from since applying, so it helped in my case.
