Hello,

Sorry if a similar question to this has already been discussed in the forums. I was unable to find anything that directly answered my question.

I have an MCAT score of 500 with an undergrad GPA of 3.42

I am would like to get opinions as to the best DO schools who would take interest to me with these numbers. I know there are schools with no minimum MCAT scores or minimum GPA, and also schools who have minimum scores less than mine above.

Any advice as to schools who regularly accept students with scores in this range would be appreciated. Hopefully a list of 20 or so schools to consider would be appreciated. Maybe including schools with highest acceptance rates, or high out of state acceptance rates.

OU-HCOM, PNWU, UNECOM, OSU COM, KYCOM, all have either outright instate or regional preferences. KCU wants >501 MCAT.

What's your sGPA like? I'd look at newer schools like ACOM, ARCOM, ICOM. WVSOM seems to give a fairly "holistic" look at applicants with a range of stats. With a 500 MCAT, the Touros, CCOM, AZCOM and the RVUs are not going to be very friendly. Good luck and prepare to spend lots of time trawling admissions websites. Excel is a good tool.

Easier if you make a list yourself, then post here and people can make comments.

What schools are well known to have a high In-State or Regional acceptance rate over out of state acceptance rate? Or which schools have particularly low out of state acceptance rates? Like 10% or less?

OSU, Ohio, TCOM, PCOM and Rowan have a pretty good regional bias for the NE, MSU is a state school but I’m not sure what the ratio is, PWNU has a heavy bias for the NW, UNECOM for the NE.

The first 3 mentioned have OOS numbers less than 10%.

So to provide some additional information. I am a nontraditional student going on 3-4 years out of college now. In my upper 20s with a wife, 2 kids in elementary school, and hoping for a 3rd.

To expand on previous. I have a 3.51 gpa at my most recent university in undergrad, combined cumulative gpa of 3.42 including my initial community college years. MCAT score is exactly at 500.

I have 4 years experience working as a Scribe in the busiest emergency department in the state. Personally have written closing in on around 40,000 charts from that many patient interactions. I have some volunteering experience through the local free clinic in town, and even went on a medical missionary trip in South America.

I applied to 2 DO schools in the past in which I was waitlisted at both and ultimately did not get in, so this year I am broadening my options and going to apply nationwide. I was hoping for about 25-30 DO schools. Going to do about 2-3 MD schools, and 4 Caribbean schools (last resort)

This is the list of schools I have created based on information I have gotten from SDN, and from coworkers, other online resources, the schools' websites, etc... Lots of information is conflicting (because nothing is black/white when talking about this subject) but I was hoping to get some advice on the school list provided below.

Are there any schools on my considered list that people think may be a waste of money and time for me? Are there any schools on the NOT considered list that people think "you should totally apply there."? If responding, it would be helpful to get the reasoning and thought process behind your opinions also!

Thanks in advance. I value everyone's opinions.

MSUCOM has a heavy in-state preference (~85% of the 2017 class.)
UIWSOM has a decent in-state preference (at my interview they mentioned around 75% of interviewees are from TX.)
PNWUCOM has a heavy regional preference (Northwest.)

EDIT - OSUCOM has a heavy -in-state preference (~90% of the 2017 class.)

Some of the other schools on your list, e.g. DMUCOM and RVUCOM, have GPA and MCAT averages of ~3.5 and 506(7), so either reconsider applying to those schools, or get your application in ASAP.

Agree with all of the information in this post.

I think that if you throw your net wide enough, you should get some bites. Just don’t throw it so wide that you end up making donations to schools that are extremely unlikely to interview or accept you.

yeah I agree as well. I initially had planned on 20 DO and 20 MD schools but was talked out of it after realizing most of that money would go up in smoke. Getting more comfortable with the list I have now, but that is why I started the post. People from around the nation have different insight and experience compared to the people I know locally, so I wanted to get lots of opinions.

I can't recommend MD schools with a 500 MCAT unless you are URM and have a crazy good story

I plan on sending out applications in the next few days so any last minute advice is again appreciated. Referencing my stats above, are there any schools on my considered list that maybe shouldn't be? Or any schools on my not considered list that maybe should be? If providing some advice, please include a description of your thought process behind it.

You should apply to DMU. It's a bit of a reach but they aren't as stat whory as the midwesterns or touros
