friends:

i am gearing up to apply to DO schools and i don't really have a sense of what the schools are like outside of my area. i'm in jersey, so i have a sense of NJ-SOM and also PCOM and NYCOM.

what about the others? does anyone want to share their impressions of other DO schools--education, quality of life, repuation etc..

i love the west and would like to hear about life as a DO student out there!

thanks in advance for sharing

ps-i don't know what the abbreviations mean yet, so i would sure appreciate it if you would spell out the name 🙂

so its not out west, but the University of New England College of Ost. Med [NECOM] has a really great reputation from what ive heard. portland is a great town, lots of great housing, and really nice people... the education is supposed to be phenominal too!

I would say any public school that has its own hospital are probably good. MSUCOM, OSUCOM and TCOM comes to mind. I am a little worrying about any of new schools that ask students to find their own rotation during third and fourth year.

As far as I know only AZCOM has this....however there is an advatage to this, you can go wherever you want and several students have rotated a very big name University Hospitals.

COMP (Western University, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific) in Pomona has well established rotations. Many of them along side MD students like Loma Linda etc..

Ahhhh.... the way reality and fantasy meet on SDN. 🙂

AZCOM does NOT force it's students to find their own rotations. All students will be assigned preceptor based rotations unless the student sets up other rotations on their own.

Just to be very, very clear: opting out of preceptor rotations for hospital based is not the same as setting up your own rotations.

I don't mean to offend you Ryan, as I'm sure you're just trying to help, and just repeating what you've been told. It just gets frustrating to see a few malcontents on SDN paint a picture that isn't shared by the vast majority of AZCOM students.

COMP BABY

no doubt about it!

My brother went to Kirskville (KCOM) and just loved it. He is doing is orthopedic residency right now. I will be attending KCOM this fall, and I seem to think it will be great! If you don't mind living in the middle of nowhere (no distractions, cheap rent), then I say go for KCOM.

i am really interested in UNECOM but I heard that they hardly ever accept out of state applicants...is this true??? Is it worth applying to if I am a NY resident?

VCOM (Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine) is brand new (about to start their 2nd class this fall) - they have top notch facilities and hands down the best anatomy lab I have seen in my life (including my P.T. school and all the medical schools where I interviewed). Physicians in Virginia at least are very enthusiastic and the fact that they had a provisional accredidation in their first year of operation is very impressive. I'd imagine that it will be a great school. It is located in a rural area (Blacksburg, VA) and is associated with the VA Tech campus (students can use facilities there).

CCOM is one of the older osteopathic schools in the country and has some clinical rotation advantages in that is located 30 minutes outside of downtown Chicago. It seems to be very well respected in the area. My cousin is a neuro ICU nurse at Northwestern and has had nothing but good things to say about CCOM students and residents that she has met.

Good luck!!!

UNECOM, as part of there mission statment seeks to train DOs who will serve in the New England area, as such I believe that intentions to practice in New England help, but are not required. We do have a number of studnets from New England (not just Maine) as well as students from all over. Canada, Alaska, CA, CO, MI, and so on.

I know of one NY resident who was asked about plans to practice in New England and the student mentioned retuning home (to NY) because she thought New York was part of New England. That student is here at UNE so I wouldn't worry.

I talked to admissions @ UNE about this. They told me that their mission statement does ask for people from the New England area, but that the reason that most of the students are accepted are from Maine is that their applicant pool is largely out of Maine and the surrounding states. He told me that I would be competitive even though I am from Indiana as long as I signed up for a biochem course. If you have questions, I would urge you to call them and speak directly to the admissions office...they were very helpful and informative to me.

Yes, when it's windy outside. But then again, I think that is the case for most cities....
