Personally, I think the top dawg DO schools are:

PCOM
LECOM
KCUMB
NYITCOM
ROWANCOM
MSUCOM
CCOM
AZCOM
OUHCOM
TOUROCOM

what do you think?

I think WesternU COM, VCOM, RVUCOM are rather shady. Newer schools like ACOM/BCOM are too risky. Other schools are in rural areas and farm out students all over the nation for rotations.

What do you think the BEST DO schools are? By that criteria, I mean DO schools with in house rotations/residency programs.

Is that list in any particular order? Also, RVU-CO has been getting great feedback from students and have awesome pass rates! I am in that area for the next year or so and so far, all medical professionals in the area have nothing but great things to say about the school and its students. It's only shady because it's technically a 'for profit' school.

Stahhhhp making these. As a pre-med you seriously have no idea what school is better than others (trust me I thought I knew before I interviewed as well so you aren't exactly alone). With that said if you want something to hold on to, I would choose Ok State(did choose) or PCOM over any other DO school. I would throw MSU in there if they weren't 80k for OOS. I was interviewed and accepted at the majority of the private schools people consider "top tier" and none of them come close to these two as far as resources, residencies, fellowships, ect.

At the end of the day there are people who do very well coming from "low tier" schools.....the opportunity to become a DO or MD is in your hands no matter where you get in, if you choose not to work it won't matter where you went because you won't pass the boards

I get what you're implying about RVU, but what is it you think is shady about western and vcom?

And why is bcom just risky and not shady?

Please explain why these three, in particular, are shady in your opinion.

Well obviously RVU because they are located in the shade of the Rocky Mountains, Western because there is a high probability you will be mugged =shady, and VCOM I guess in reference to the lack of shade due to GW cutting down his cherry trees. :shrug:Remember, this OP is the same guy who made a whole thread about his DO underdawgness with a 3.4+ and a 510.

Again man? Swatting the bees nest again?? No one here wants to put down any school-- nor is it beneficial to arbitrarily claim certain schools are shady. Those are all great schools

Here's my tier list in this specific order

1. The school that accepts you ( if 2 or more, consider the one you most enjoyed visiting and connected with)
2. Everything else.

This this this this this this this. At the end of the day, from what I've gathered, the school isn't as important as your work ethic towards learning the material for boards and your evaluations during rotations which again falls under your personality and work ethic. Notice the amount of "your" involved.

Please note - I am not a med student yet but this is just what I've gathered.

These posts are pointless and without any fact or merit what so ever. That being said, I love the guys profile picture... almost hypnotizing...

What a month to be alive on SDN, two of these threads in just a week or two! Such excitement, I wonder if the responses change or not? Let's sit around and find out :beat:

Each school has their pros and cons. After my first interview, I noticed how important finding a good fit really is for you. If you're smart, you'll assess your individual needs and which schools could satisfy those needs best and choose then rather than just picking the "best DO" school.

For a premed since 2012, you sure are picky.

Lol at RVU being shady. I've been living in Colorado for months and there haven't been many clouds. Being for-profit makes me their product, and I will gladly be sold :bucktooth:

I refuse to believe that LECOM and TOURO-NY rank above schools like CUSOM who does rotations on the wards of Wake Forest teaching hospital or older established schools like WVSOM.

LECOM has wacky school policies and giant cuts out of the education budget (you don't even do your own dissections). TOURO-NY is literally in the attic of a dollar store.

How you think these school even belong in a rank is beyond me.

This troll thread is bad and you should feel bad.

I don't go to RVU but it seems like it's actually a well run school with high performing students. Not sure what all the hate is for. These other D.O. schools we go to are just as shady IMHO.

The issue with ranking any school (MD or DO) is figuring out what you consider to be best. Is it: Acceptance stats, MCAT, EC's, Residency Placement, Type of Residency (If you like family med, surgery, IM, etc then A may be better than B or B better than C), Cost, Location, Percentage of students who graduate, High tech equipment, Faculty, Rotations, etc. US News ranks schools according to how well they jump through hoops.

It would be nice if stats were available in one simple location showing all of the above, but as long as there are more applicants than slots there is little benefit to schools to publish all of that info in a simple to get format.

Ultimately, if you only get one offer then that is the best school for you.

Lol LECOM is going to court and is about to lose their tax exemption status but you think RVU is shady. Okay. Cool. You do you bro.

Also, TouroNY is a mess, CCOM is one of the most expensive medical school in the country, and NYITCOM has a class size of 320 with a satellite campus that's in shambles. But, yeah, go ahead and consider them "big peckers"

Hahahaha nice usage of "you do you" here.
Well played
Explanation: at the RVU orientation they had us use #UDoURVU to tag all of our photos, so it was funny to see it used here.

When you go into the real world, you are going to meet people who are going to wonder what you are, they won't even care what school you went to when they do not know anything about DOs.

I haven't yet experienced this. Most people just know me as "Doctor". I sometimes explain the difference when I offer OMT to a patient but I've honestly never had anyone question my credentials or ask me about my nametag and the DO.

If I'm being honest. People see the stethoscope and the fact that I'm a male and generally either in scrubs or nice shirt and slacks and assume I'm a doctor. That's as far as it goes.

On the other-hand, some of my female co-residents (even those with MD on their coats and badges) get mistaken for nurses on the regular. Which is pretty aggravating, even to me.

Agreed. With 5,000+ DO grads annually, I think most people know that DO = doctor (even if they couldn't tell you a thing about OMT). I could see people questioning the degree if the location is relatively isolated, but for the most part this won't happen. My husband is a DO resident and no one has ever squinted at the embroidery on his coat and asked to see the "real" doctor.

Can you elaborate on this?????

Tax board revokes exemption status for all LECOM properties:
http://www.erienewsnow.com/story/32425156/tax-board-revokes-exemption-status-on-all-lecom-properties

Board denies LECOM Tax Exemeption:
http://www.yourerie.com/news/local-news/board-denies-lecom-tax-exemption

LECOM wasn't able to properly defend it's non-profit status. They tried to settle the case with a $1.5 million deal with city officials but that fell in the tubes too. They now have to pay taxes for their hospital, COM, gym, and senior living center to Erie County.

This doesn't affect the Bradenton campus.

I'm more curious to know if Seton Hill University is going to renew LECOM's lease for the LECOM-SH campus. That's up for renewal this year too.

Wait, so now LECOM is officially the first for-profit DO school?

With its weird policies and budget cuts, does that make it the DO equivalent of the Caribbean?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the future

CUSOM is rural but it has mostly "in house rotations and residency programs" unlike other rural programs. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, that and it does core rotations on the wards at Wake Forest Teaching Hospital

CUSOM, to me, seems like the hidden gem of the DO world. Above average board scores (they'll only get better with the years), above average rotations, they've already set up hundreds of residency programs, and its a state with a severe physician shortage. Business will be booming after you graduate (assuming you stay in state). Because its a new school and there is a stigma associated with newer schools, it gets overlooked, even though evidence says otherwise.

I know. I think the same could be said about LMU if they had wards rotations and hadn't doubled their class size.

They also have a physician shortage, above average board scores, new facilities, and a really good pre-clinical education. And a pretty awesome match list to boot. They sent 8 kids into ortho, 3 into neuro, 1 into ENT, around 10 or so into Gen Surgery, and dozens of students into university and large community hospital FM and IM programs.

People have said that their students "succeed in spite of their education at LMU", but with high first time COMLEX pass rates and above average COMLEX scores, the school must be doing something right
