--> Look at the founding dates of schools as well: the schools listed above were founded in 1972 or before. Schools founded in the 80's & 90's won't have produced enough graduates to have generated as much prestige/reputation (in general.)**

I'd agree with this.

The question you might want to be asking, though, is which DO schools you might want to think twice about going to. I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything, but there are a few schools that have had some problems with board pass rates in the last few years.

But generally speaking, DO schools have less "reputation variation" than MD schools.

I'm also personally a fan of KCUMB and NSU-COM.

My premed advisor told me PCOM was like Harvard of DO schools. She also told me CCOM is also highly regarded.

A few have had trouble with board pass rates...but in general, with so few schools, you can make a good case for several of them, which would lead to the conclusion that there are no true "superior" DO schools. All the schools mentioned above are excellent...but what about AZCOM with its board rates? UMDNJ with its research funding? UNECOM's facilities? NYCOM's rotations? And so forth...I know the board pass rates don't lie and probably weigh the heaviest, but I truly believe that the osteopathic schools on the whole have developed into a wonderful network of extremely thorough and competent institutions, whether old and prestigious or new and unsung.

Although VCOM hasn't even produced its first batch of physicians, it will be an up and coming school. True, it will take several years to establish a strong reputation, it does have some things in its favor now that at least point it in the right direction:

For one, its current Dean came from KCOM which gives the school some credibility since KCOM is a strong school.

Two, although VCOM is a private school it sits on the campus of Virginia Tech at the corporate research center. VCOM is described more as a hybrid between a state funded school and a private institution, and because of this relationship between these two the VCOM students have all the rights and priveledges of VT and its resources, yes, even the football games (I am not a Hokie fan, but at least they are ACC).

Also, because of this association with VT they have some good things going on in areas of research that I think will further help the cause of the "DO" profession at large, and hopefully have a positive impact on the DO name recognition issue. VCOM is not a MSUCOM, KCOM, or OSUCOM (yet), but I believe it has the potential behind it to become a strong school. I am glad I can be a part of it in its infancy.

Who cares? If you do then you should apply to the real "Ivy League" schools.

It's sad but everything these days are ranked, and we grow up in this society. Some educated people like yourself don't care for these things, but it can influence decision that some people make. I try not to worry about these things, but if I meet enough ingorant people I start to wonder myself as well. We should teach people here to look beyond numbers and rankings!

Well, I think it is important to go to the best school for you but the whole "Ivy League" thing is such nonsense. It is to the point where people think just because of a name a school is superior in every way. I remember the mentality in junior high school; I am wearing Reeboks or Nike so I am better than you. In the end it is you against you.

National Ranking can be (and is) a factor in deciding on a school and shouldn't be dismissed. It may not be as important as other factors, but it cannot be ignored entirely.

The idea that one should completely ignore that some schools are better than others is ridiculous.

It is important to get to know each school and not just assume they are all going to provide you with the best opportunities for what you want to do.

(it was on the bottom of someone's list) and that was the only school you were accepted into.... would you NOT go ? and wait for an extra, maybe retake the mcats, work your gpa up, waste $$ on application ??

Well, goodluck w/ deciding... I think you should just apply to a school where you feel comfortable at... I think all DO schools have its plus and negative anyways.... and who cares about the crazy ranking ??? I'm sure if you are a good Doctor graduating from VCOM, it wouldnt make difference graduating from a "higher ranked" school.

And with the board passing rate.... I am sure most of the school have close to a 80% if not higher passing rate... why are you already putting in yourself in the category of the 20% failing unless you feel you aren't good enough... then in that case, dont even bother applying. You go to med school to do your best and not to look at stats people before you have accumulated.

I think the question is what if you are accepted to 2 schools. One of them is the best school, and one has never even graduated a class. Wouldn't it be helpful? U.S. News & World Report Ranks all medical schools.

Personally I don't put any stock into rankings. I will agree that there are better schools, but in my opinion what constitutes a better school is entirely subjective and individual to each person. For example if you hate big cities and have no desire to be anywhere near them PCOM is probably not the right choice for you. It doesn't matter how high PCOM ranks on a list if you would personally be unhappy at said school. It all boils down to personal preference. One shouldn't rely simply on what some magazine or what a few people have to say about a school. They should go out and do some research, find out for themselves about what the school has to offer. Weigh your options and make an informed decision based on your personality and your feelings about the school. It has been said many many times before on this forum, but I am going to repeat the mantra, "You get out of medical school what you put in."

yeah... OSUdoc is right... i guess if you had a choice between two schools, its better to take opinion of a respectable magazine and other people's opinions about the schools even if they didnt go to it (not mockery)... but all schools and opinions of people aren't 100%... they might find that this school overall is 80% good compared to the other school who is 75%... so it will get higher rating... ever wonder what happens to the kids who are at the 20% ?

Not to say... some schools have 100% board passing rate.... should also find out.. how many dropped out first year... and how many students.

If a school has 100 students = spots are more competitive than a school that has 300 students most likely. If the school takes 100 "very smart" students bound to all pass the board exams it will give the school a 100% pass rate. compared to a school that accepts 200 "very smart" students and 100 students that have struggles in academia.... They will have a passing rate of 66% IDEALLY. Therefore, there college may be ranked lower due to board passing rate. Does it mean that the school w/ population of 300 students have stupid students ?? NO it doesn't... it just means that if people want to look at %... they should look at what the number is actually counting for.

Hope I don't get too much heat on my a$$ but
(i.e. My friend goes to SGU... MD school in the carribean... advertise their passing rate as 92% for USMLE. When my friend went to actually ask how many student takes the USMLE... the representative was hesitant but said 350-400? Not 100% sure about exact numbers... but its around there. FUNNY..... because SGU has 600 students total, what happened to the 200-250 ?)

Lesson: DONT take numbers for face value.

DORoe: I agree w/ his post as well. Medical school is what you take out of it. I am sure some VCOM can graduate w/ a residency match in neurosurgery and probably NOT even one can match that in a "higher ranked" school for that year.

On a side note, it is also funny to find out that no matter what school you go to, theres always something to complain about. I went to "DO Day on the Hill" last spring and EVERYONE complained about their school... maybe they were all trying to play a trick on me... not sure but whatever.
