I am currently trying to get some shadowing experience from DO physicians before I return back to school in 2 weeks, and I am a bit unsure of what to do. I have one family medicine physician and one general surgery physician, both part of the same hospital, who have agreed to let me shadow. In order to best establish a connection with a physician, I figured I should just shadow one for the entire 2 weeks, but is it a good idea to shadow both of them since they work within walking distance of one another?

I think it would be beneficial. You'll be able to see how being a DO affects practice across different specialties (aka perhaps seeing the FM doc use HVLA on for his patients vs the DO surgeon who may not even use OMT). You'll be able to ask them both questions to about how they entered their specialty.

If you can spend a full week shadowing each one... do that!

Spend enough time with each one to understand what they do on a daily basis. I would say that 5 x 4-8 hour days would be enough for each of the two.

Listen to this guy! Give great advice 100% of the time.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I also need a DO to write a recommendation letter for me, so I guess it wouldn't make too much of a difference in the quality of the letter if I just shadow one for 2 weeks or shadow two split between the 2 weeks?

Just ask them both for letters. The more the better.

Shadow both!

Is it bad if you have <16 hrs of shadowing exp with a DO but you have a LOR from them. Is that sufficient? Shadowed MD's though for much longer periods of time because they are sooo much easier to find.

Doing more cannot hurt!
