HI
I live in Fremont, California. The only 2 hospitals in my area I known of it Kaiser and Washington and they both say not to student shadowing individually.
I graduated last year so I can't get my school to help me with shadowing either.

Can anyone help?
Did anyone live in CA around my area and have successful shadowing done?
Please advice where to look for one

Thank you very much

April

no idea, but i grew up in pleasanton and loved it! bay area represent.. good luck!

You can make your membership here of some use and post in some of the specialty boards? Just be respectful and honest.

Im in northern California too. the hospitals around here didn't allow individual shadowing but they allowed er volunteering. I just asked the doctors on shift if they minded me tagging along and most of em were ok with it.

Two of the docs were DOs so i kind of lucked out that i got some experience that way.

Hey OP, you're in luck. I am from the area and found a very nice DO to shadow. Send me a PM.

There are 1500 DOs in California listed on http://www.osteopathic.org/osteopathic-health/find-a-do/Pages/default.aspx, take your pick.

I'm also from NorCal and I had a tough time finding a DO to shadow. There don't seem to be too many doctors in general that are cool with people shadowing them. When you consider that the DO population is much smaller compared to MD, it makes it even tougher.

To add to what Ravizzle said, I had to work the system the best way I could. I was volunteering in the ER in my local hospital. Make sure to use your connections! I used my position to talk to MDs and started shadowing one of them. He was a super nice, smart and helpful guy. After shadowing him for a while, I told him I was going to be applying to DO schools, and he gave me the email address for one of his DO colleagues. I then emailed this DO, and made sure to name-drop the MD's name, and I finally got a response.

Consider that this DO was the first to respond to me, and I had previously delivered personal letters to 8 different DO offices to get no response. It's all in the name-drop and using your connections to your advantage (just like in the real world). This is a really roundabout way, but your chances of landing one is pretty decent. Consider this method if that AOA database doesn't work out for you.

I live in San Francisco and it was near impossible for me to find one (DO). The only one I have found has now turned into an insurance claim doc. All he does is review files now.

The great majority are in SoCal, and from the few here, I found nearly none willing to even sit down for coffee.

I found 32 DOs in San Francisco, with a wide variety of specialties. Did you not look at osteopathic.org or are you having trouble getting one on the list to agree to let you shadow?

Sure, and when I tried to call them, from those that bothered to even answer, I found 0 willing to allow shadowing. Even when I was president of my local Pre-SOMA and the national chair tried to find someone willing, she was unable. Everyone cites HIPAA

Dang that is some bad luck, sorry to hear that! As Syialb stated earlier, you have to use your connections if you have some. I luckily have not had any trouble finding DOs, and I owe much of this due to connections with friends.

That is just frustrating to hear, though. Out of 32 DOs listed on the national osteopathic website, 0 were able to shadow? This just doesn't perpetuate the tight-knit DO community I've heard about and seen in my neck of the woods.

When school starts back again, drive up to Touro on Monday and Tuesday noons. We have the SAAO clinic where students are treating people with OMM. If you come often enough, you'll make many relationships with the students and/or staff.

Yup. I have no connection what so ever. The first person in my family to graduate HS and graduate from college and my distant family and family friend are Doctor in other country and just come here and taking USMLE and one just got residency in New York. In 5- 10 years from now then I can get some connection but now nothing.

So I would appreciate if anyone can help me get even one DO to shadow.

Ah. where is that? and what SAAO and OMM. Sorry if it sound stupid, I have slight fever and headache and nothing make senses as of now.

Touro is in Vallejo. OMM is osteopathic manipulative medicine (the stuff that makes DO different than MDs). Not sure what SAAO is but guessing its their clinic where they practice.

When does school start up? I'm in Davis, but wouldn't mind driving to Vallejo to see some OMM, the DOs I've observed with never use OMM.

Many work at hospitals that don't allow them to do this, so I don't take it personally. Not all 32 responded. I'd say about 1/3 did and the rest simply ignored the call/visit.

Bump, for anyone that has had any luck with any DO's to shadow from the Bay Area? I am applying this cycle and desperately need shadowing experience and a letter!

Ooh... Please do some research about OMM if you are considering to be a D.O. It will probably make your future shadowing experiences more enlightening.

SAAO is the student chapter of the American Academy of Osteopathy. It is a club where students use and practice OMM to treat peers and other patients.

Touro University is the only College of Osteopathic Medicine in NorCal, and is located on Mare Island in Vallejo.

Orientation starts Aug 1st, and classes starts a week after that. I'm not sure when SAAO starts again, but you can keep a close eye on their schedule which would most likely be posted here: http://www.tustudentlife.com/clubs/saao/events/
