Posted this in the pre allo but maybe this is more appropriate 😛

I have submitted my AACOMAS app last week and I am waiting to be verified. I have 3 very strong letters (1PI, 1MD, and 1 science). I HAVE NO DO letters nor shadowing. Before anyone asks I have interacted with DOs at TCOM via research and conferences. I have contacted multiple DOs recently that will let me shadow. If I shadow for the next month and get a letter will that look bad? Is it too late to add that? I know not all schools require a DO letter but I don't want to miss out on any schools due to a letter. Thanks

I think a DO letter is pretty important. DO schools seem to do the same thing as MD schools as far as teaching goes, so the quality of education is really the same. Better in my opinion because my cousins say they do alot more clinical practice and MDs do alot more research.

The difference is the stats, yes DO schools seem to be a bit lower, and I think its because they are mission oriented. Trying to show you truly want to pursue the DO route.

Sometimes I wish they catered to DO first choice more than the MD reject-then apply DO lol

So, its not too late? I really didn't follow your response with my questions 😛 😛

It shouldnt be too late if your stats are decent I think. I havent been accepted yet either. if your stats are low, just send in a note to each school saying your DO letter is coming soon.

My DO only let me shadow for 8 hours and signed the letter.
The other MDS I shadowed, for 2 days each and they each wrote me letters too, I dont think you need a full month of shadowing, infact Im surprised they would let someone shadow for a month, the most time I can get from any physician is 3 days.

Dang that's all you need to shadow lol cool. I thinks its cause I work at the hospital they practice at. Im still not even verified yet 🙁 They say it will be about a month til Im complete so I figured I have a month to get that DO letter. Im really trying to apply to 32+ schools.

Yes, that being said I have almost 500+ hours of shadowing. I would do them in short busts of like 18 hours a day for 2-3 days, and I would do a week of these kinds of rotations.

I repeated this cycle for 6 weeks at various hospitals so I covered many specialties over 2 years. I think applying to all 32 schools is a smart idea. I dont know about the verification, I submitted my app like June 5th and it was ready by June 15th (the first day schools got it).
Some doctors want you to spend more time, one made me spend 6 days 20 hours a day, and I slept in the resident room for 4 hours before I had to start up again because he truly wanted to make sure I was ready to deal with some of the things (which can be a bit scary if I may say) . Others make you shadow for just a day and write the letter, depends on the doctor.

Sweet 🙂 Should I ask them about the letter before I even begin shadowing? Like about the possibility of getting a letter?
