Hi, I'm an OMS-2 studying for both Level and Step 1 at a school based in the southwest (not CA). I'm very interested in completing all of my 4th year electives in CA (family ties + saving on rent).

Are there any current OMS-4's that can speak to whether most academic institutions in SoCal (e.g., UCLA, UCI, UCR, etc.) require Step 1 for their 4th year electives? Not interested in any super competitive electives like derm or surgical subfields if this helps. Thank you very much for your time.

Passing Step 1 or Comlex 1 is a requirement for UCLA 4th year clinical rotations. It is extremely competitive and I believe you have to honor all 3rd year primary clinical training to be considered. If you are trying to do an away sub-i in something like Ophthalmology at UCLA, your chance is near zero as a DO.
