Hey guys, posting for a friend who knows for sure he wants to do surgery but is torn between the dental route to OMFS or D.O. to ENT, orthopedics, etc. (wasn't sure which forum to use)

Due to some life events the past few years his science gpa hovers between a 3.27 (for dental) and a 3.49 (for DO, he's not planning on MD due to lower GPA w/o grade replacement)

Obviously it's pretty impossible to choose the exact specialty you want before you've even finished the basic clinical training, so he's not sure. He's not crazy about the idea of practicing primary care as a D.O or general dentistry, he definitely wants a surgery-based career either way. I thought maybe the dental route would be better because even general dentists do some surgery.

I know this isn't a situation that has a simple right answer, but I was curious as to whether you guys could give any opinions on what you would prefer if you were definitely shooting for surgery. Any thoughts on ease of obtaining surgical residencies from either route, lifestyle, etc would be very helpful! Thanks

Why not look into podiatry if all they wanna do is surgery (OMFS, Orthopedics, ENT, etc... seem to be pretty different from one another)- they can do foot and ankle surgery with a little extra training and the requirements to get in are quite a bit lower than both DO and dental.
